Safe 'n' Sound, Featherstone

At a Glance

Low-level baby resources, signing and a map of Featherstone give this nursery's inspection account its character: children could reach, communicate and explore their surroundings for themselves. Ofsted rated Safe 'n' Sound, Featherstone Outstanding at its 30 November 2023 inspection. The strongest practical thread is independence, from choosing resources to managing parts of mealtimes.

The nursery has capacity for 75 children and accepts ages 3 to 60 months. Its address is Featherstone Lane, Featherstone, Pontefract, WF7 6LS. Those whole-setting places should not be read as the size of an individual group.

The Nursery Experience

The early years foundation stage sets the framework for children's learning, development and care. Here, the November 2023 account illustrates that through movement, music, conversation and practical play.

In November 2023, funky fingers challenges included fastening paper with pegs, while stomp and hop involved following movement instructions on a large screen. These gave children different ways to practise hand control and whole-body movement. Outdoors, children experimented with instruments and distinguished sounds made by music from those around them.

Resources and displays in the baby room had been lowered so younger children could reach them. That is a concrete example of the environment supporting choice. Older children explored a local map, identifying buildings and places in their community; library visits and visitors from the police, fire service and local rugby team extended that learning beyond the nursery's own activities.

Care and Support

At the November 2023 inspection, Ofsted found effective safeguarding arrangements and strong support for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities, with the setting's special educational needs coordinator and outside professionals helping staff support their progress.

In November 2023, familiar songs accompanied care for babies and younger children, and practitioners used signing alongside speech. Children who did not communicate verbally used signs to express what they wanted or needed. Staff also brought words from children's home languages into their interactions, giving communication more than one route.

Everyday routines provided opportunities to practise independence: older children handled their own handwashing, helped themselves to vegetables and poured drinks. Staff received individual development plans, coaching and mentoring, while supervision gave them opportunities to discuss their work. In November 2023, these arrangements gave staff individual development goals and management support.

Practical Information

Opening hours are 7.30am to 6pm, Monday to Friday. The nursery operates across the year, closing for bank holidays and one week over Christmas. For parents, that closure belongs in the annual childcare plan alongside the normal working-week hours.

In November 2023, the nursery provided funded early education for children aged two, three and four. This is an inspection-time account of participation, rather than a statement of a family's current entitlement.

Things to Consider

  • Putting the inspection in context. The Outstanding judgement dates to November 2023. It provides a detailed assessment at that point; families choosing care now should weigh that date alongside their own priorities.
  • Settling and communication. On a visit, how would a key person plan your child's settling period and incorporate any signing or home-language words they use?

The Verdict

Safe 'n' Sound, Featherstone merits consideration by families who value practical independence and several ways for children to communicate. Its November 2023 account contains concrete examples, from accessible baby resources to signing and community exploration. The year-round opening pattern may suit working-week childcare needs, with the Christmas closure requiring planning.
