Toddlers explored sensory materials connected to a story about a whale.

Daily outdoor access gave children scope to climb steps, practise kicking balls and investigate natural materials. The group bug hunt was collaborative: older children searched with binoculars, collected insects and used a book with staff to identify what they found.

This detail comes with an important qualification. Inspectors found no clear curriculum across the nursery and inconsistent teaching. Babies learning to walk were not always encouraged to move or explore different levels, while some activities did not extend learning far enough.

Key-person arrangements were thoughtful at the inspection: leaders watched which adults babies bonded with before allocating a key person, and familiar staff handled personal care. That helped children develop trust and security. Nutritious meals were prepared by an on-site chef; at lunch, older children explored spices, raw aubergine and lentils while staff built vocabulary.

Leaders had begun responding to staffing instability with more detailed supervision, newsletters, a parent information board and stay-and-play events. Inspectors nevertheless required supervision to become more effective so every practitioner understood their role and received consistent support.

Inclusion was less consistent. Older children with SEND generally made steady progress when staff knew them well, but training for work with SEND and children learning English as an additional language needed improvement. The garden was not always adapted so babies with SEND could participate. Monitoring also needed to identify developmental concerns more quickly, so appropriate support could begin sooner. Older children benefited when practitioners used conversation to introduce new words, yet communication and language teaching did not consistently meet the needs of children learning English as an additional language. This makes the quality of adult interaction, not simply the activity list, a central point for families to explore.

The report recorded daily garden use and food prepared on site, but these are inspection-date observations rather than a current service promise. Confirm present meal arrangements, dietary provision and outdoor routines when enquiring.

• Curriculum consistency. The 2026 report required clearer planning and stronger staff knowledge of child development. Ask what has changed since the inspection and how leaders now check the quality of teaching across ages.
• Inclusion practice. Training and monitoring for SEND and English as an additional language needed attention. Families needing adjustments should discuss how current plans, staffing and garden access meet their child's needs.

Warm relationships, cooperative play, daily garden access and purposeful mealtime conversation are genuine positives. Staff modelled respectful behaviour, and children responded by sharing, taking turns and working together. The regulatory picture is nevertheless mixed: welfare, routines and safeguarding met the expected standards, while teaching, inclusion and leadership required improvement. This setting may suit families who value a central Watford nursery and can satisfy themselves that the four required actions have translated into consistent practice.
