Ofsted judged Jack in the Box at Nascotwood Outstanding in December 2024 across education, behaviour and attitudes, personal development, and leadership and management, and found safeguarding effective and learning exceptionally well sequenced.

This is a 30-place setting at Nascot Wood Junior School on Nascot Wood Road, Watford. Its strongest character comes through in precise teaching: a tea-shop role play led into patterned dough tigers and counting, while work on Arctic animals encouraged children to compare beluga whales and narwhals.

The Early Years Foundation Stage sets the educational programmes, early learning goals and assessment points for the day. Here, staff connect experiences so that children revisit ideas, extend vocabulary and build on what they can already do. A winter curiosity cube introduced positional language; later group work moved children from in front and next to towards in between and behind.

Literacy work is equally purposeful. Leaders identified an attainment gap, introduced a monitored lending library and book activity packs, then checked their impact. Children also grew, tended and harvested vegetables in the garden with help from parents, linking practical responsibility with learning about food.

Emotional support starts with information children can communicate themselves. Self-registration helped children identify their feelings, allowing staff to adjust support before learning began. Familiar routines, clear language and a bell cue helped children regulate their behaviour.

Communication support was a major strength. Staff switched between spoken prompts and signing so children with differing communication needs could take part. For children with SEND, both day-to-day help and the shape of familiar routines were tailored around the child. Parent partnerships included practical guidance, extensive communication and work with other professionals.

Ofsted found safeguarding effective in December 2024; its account showed concerns and decisions being handled openly, with children's welfare directing practice.
