St Luke's Pre-School is a sessional setting at St Luke's Church on Langley Way in Watford. Its clearest strength is personal attention: the May 2024 inspection found that children's interests shaped staff practice and that the key-person system helped children feel safe and secure.
Ofsted judged the setting Good in May 2024, with effective safeguarding. The same inspection found good education, behaviour and attitudes, personal development, and leadership and management.
Each morning began with a group dance session in May 2024, giving children an energetic start before learning moved into activities planned around their interests and needs. Staff developed language through discussion, stories, props and role play. During one craft activity, children explored different papers while learning words including crunchy and shiny.
The Early Years Foundation Stage sets the areas of learning and development for the day. Here, inspectors saw children choosing books independently, acting out favourite stories with props and character models, and exploring cultures through model foods and songs in other languages. Small groups also took part in daily planned outdoor activities matched to learning needs.
The key-person system gave children a familiar adult to turn to; children sought comfort when tired and proudly shared their artwork with staff. One-to-one support helped staff understand the particular needs of children with SEND. Changes to the morning routine had also helped children separate from carers and settle quickly into play.
Ofsted found safeguarding effective in May 2024, within an open and positive culture centred on children's interests. Staff monitored learning for gaps, while the manager monitored staff performance and well-being and arranged relevant training.
The setting is based at St Luke's Church, Langley Way, Watford, WD17 3EJ. It has capacity for 37 children in total.
Older children practised useful school routines at mealtimes in May 2024: they sat at their own table, poured drinks, then cleared plates and cutlery. That turns an ordinary meal into practical rehearsal for independence.
St Luke's Pre-School suits families who value a sessional setting where language, stories, dance and practical independence are woven through the day. The 2024 Good judgement is supported by specific strengths in key-person care, communication and behaviour, though the call for more consistent challenge for the most able is a meaningful point to test.
Ofsted judged the setting Good in May 2024. Ofsted found safeguarding effective, and all four graded areas were judged Good.
