Small World Nursery

Four rooms give Small World Nursery a clear developmental shape: a Baby Room with a separate sleep space, then Toddler, 2–3’s and Pre-School rooms, each with its own outdoor area. Children join from three months to five years, so a family can see the progression from individual feeding and nap routines through to transition forms for primary school.

In May 2022, the nursery was graded Good overall. Behaviour and attitudes were Outstanding, while education, personal development and leadership were Good; safeguarding arrangements were effective at that visit. Its account of calm relationships, language-rich interaction and carefully sequenced activities gives useful context for the setting’s character at the time.

The current picture also includes a July 2025 regulatory action. This was resolved after a follow-up visit that month, but it is relevant to a family choosing the nursery now and is set out fully under Care and Support. Full days, morning sessions and afternoon sessions are published, with shorter patterns reserved for the older two rooms.

Rooms and Ages

The Baby Room serves children from three to 15 months. Its separate sleep room and dedicated feeding area match the provider’s emphasis on individual naps, feeds and playtimes; the baby garden adds a contained outdoor option.

From 15 months to two years, the Toddler Room combines songs, stories, hands-on play and sharing with direct access to its own garden. The 2–3’s Room then shifts towards mark making, messy play, imaginative play, toilet training and independent hand washing. Its sheltered garden is intended for outdoor learning in different weather, so the room has a concrete outdoor extension rather than a general shared-play claim.

Pre-School runs from three to five years. Role play, construction, maths, literacy, small world and a creative zone sit alongside a dedicated outdoor area, registration time and end-of-year transition forms. That makes the final stage more structured while retaining adult-led and child-initiated play.

Learning and Named Experiences

The Early Years Foundation Stage frames the day. In plain terms, practitioners observe what a child can do, assess their next steps and plan play and teaching across communication, physical development, literacy, maths, understanding the world, and expressive arts and design. Small World uses Birth to 5 Matters and Development Matters alongside that statutory framework, rather than presenting them as a substitute for it.

The Nursery Allotments & Mud Kitchens give the 2–3’s and Pre-School gardens a stronger identity. Children can plant seeds, water vegetables, spot bugs and harvest herbs in the allotment patches, while the mud kitchens support messy imaginative play. The Famly app is the other useful named element: it sends parents real-time updates, photos and reports on activities, meals, naps and learning progress.

In May 2022, children explored sensory baskets, minibeasts, painting and tadpole life cycles, while staff used room books to revisit earlier activities with toddlers. These dated examples show how sensory exploration, language and recall were linked at that time.

Outdoor and Community Life

Four individual garden areas are published across the setting. The youngest children have a baby garden, while the older rooms use sheltered or dedicated spaces; the allotments and mud kitchens are concentrated in the 2–3’s and Pre-School gardens.

Meals also carry learning value. The in-house cook prepares breakfast, snacks, lunch and tea on a four-week rota, and the nursery describes children taking part in simple mealtime tasks such as finding a seat and helping set tables. Food is used to introduce different tastes and cultural events, not merely as a gap between activities.

Settling is deliberately staged. After a paperwork session that covers routines and dietary requirements, children attend several free settling-in sessions at different times of day, including playtime, mealtime and nap time, before an agreed start date. A key-person system and the Famly app then keep daily information moving between home and the room.

In May 2022, staff were described as soothing unsettled babies before naps, while older children sought staff out when tired. Safeguarding arrangements were effective at that time. Those dated observations predate the later regulatory action.

In July 2025, a welfare requirements notice required stronger recruitment procedures, enhanced criminal-record checks for everyone working directly with children, ongoing suitability monitoring and records, identity and vetting records, and better knowledge of director-change notifications. A 30 July follow-up recorded improved recruitment procedures and suitability systems, then confirmed that the safeguarding and welfare actions had been met. Both the requirements and the recorded resolution belong in a decision about the nursery, alongside its May 2022 grade.

For children with additional needs, the nursery publishes three SENCO roles, a key-person system and individual plans completed with parental consent. It also describes working with advisory teachers, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists and health visitors. Physical access is another concrete strength of the premises: ramp access, wide doorways, one-level indoor and outdoor areas and a dedicated disabled toilet are all published.

Operation Encompass is a confidential police and early-years partnership for responding after a domestic-abuse incident involving a child. Small World identifies a trained Key Adult as the programme contact.

Small World Nursery is at 22 Tolpits Lane, Watford, WD18 6AA. The setting runs Monday to Friday from 7:30am to 6pm, for 51 weeks of the year. It closes on bank holidays, the three working days between Christmas and New Year, and two staff-training days each year. A large on-site car park includes a disabled parking space.

Sessions and Attendance

Full days run from 7:30am to 6pm and are offered across all age groups. For the 2–3’s and Pre-School rooms, morning sessions run from 7:30am to 12:30pm, with afternoon sessions also published. The minimum is two full-day sessions, while private care is sold by full-day or half-day session rather than by the hour.

Funding and Paid Extras

The nursery accepts funded childcare for eligible nine-month-olds and two-year-olds, plus all three- and four-year-olds, and stretches funded hours across its 51 operating weeks. For privately paid hours, food is included in the fee, while parents provide nappies, wipes and formula milk. For funded hours, the nursery reserves the right to charge for food and non-food consumables. Activities are included for privately paid hours. A written quotation should confirm the attendance pattern and funded-hours charge structure before an offer is accepted.

• July 2025 regulatory action. The key question is how those systems now work in the room a child will join.
• Session pattern. The two-full-day minimum is important for younger children. Morning and afternoon sessions give the 2–3’s and Pre-School rooms a different attendance shape, so the practical fit changes as a child moves through the nursery.
• Funded-hour charges. Funded hours are stretched over 51 weeks, and food and consumable costs sit outside the private-hours terms. A written quotation is the clearest way to compare the total arrangement with privately paid days.
• Additional needs and access. Three SENCO roles, individual plans, specialist links and step-free physical access are published mechanisms. A family with a particular support or access requirement can discuss how these arrangements would apply to their child.

Small World Nursery has four age-specific rooms, individual gardens, the Nursery Allotments & Mud Kitchens, a cook-led four-week menu and a parent app that covers naps as well as learning. The May 2022 grade provides dated context on relationships and teaching, while the July 2025 recruitment and suitability action, and its recorded resolution, deserve equal weight in a parent’s assessment.

It is best suited to families seeking either two or more full days for a child from three months, or morning and afternoon session patterns once their child is in the 2–3’s or Pre-School room. The practical decision is whether the published minimum, the funding charge structure and the now-resolved 2025 action fit the family’s priorities as well as the rooms and outdoor provision do.
