An outdoor investigation captures this nursery at its most distinctive: children used a small garden discovery to practise observation, discussion and early scientific thinking. In March 2023, Ofsted judged the setting Good overall and found children extremely settled. It serves children from four months to five years at Ascot Community Free School, Ascot Road, Watford, WD18 8AD.
The evidence available is strongest on the quality of care and learning seen at that inspection, rather than today's practical offer. Families therefore get a clear picture of the inspection-era experience, while current rooms, attendance patterns and costs need direct verification.
In March 2023, children had rich learning opportunities indoors and outside. The garden investigation was purposeful rather than decorative: magnifying glasses, insect lists and discussion turned a small discovery into observation, language and early science. Elsewhere, children made marks by dipping toy animals' feet into paint, then built and measured a block tower before matching dice numbers to quantities of gems.
The Early Years Foundation Stage means children learn across communication, physical, personal, social and early academic development through guided activity and play, rather than following school-style lessons. The curriculum was broad, well planned and shaped around children's interests and next learning needs. Staff extended language by listening, repeating sentences accurately and introducing more complex words. That gives ordinary play a clear learning purpose.
Several observations show progression within activities. Building a tower led into measuring; throwing dice led into naming numerals and selecting matching quantities. In the garden, finding a centipede led into careful handling, close observation and discussion. These linked steps matter because they extend an interest instead of replacing it with an unrelated adult task. The paint activity similarly connected toy-animal play with experimentation in marks and patterns.
In March 2023, the youngest children received warm, responsive care, while children formed close bonds with staff who knew them well. Independence was woven into routines: children found named pegs, managed coats, helped clean and set tables, counted cups and cutlery, selected fruit and poured drinks.
Safeguarding arrangements were effective at that date, with staff's knowledge kept current and appropriately supported. Children with special educational needs and disabilities were helped to join shared play through interests such as cars and drainpipes.
One improvement point matters. During a parachute activity, staff did not always adapt group teaching sufficiently to every child's needs and abilities, leaving some children frustrated or upset. Leaders were asked to strengthen this aspect of practice.
The contrast is useful for parents. One-to-one and child-led moments appeared responsive, from babies receiving praise to children pursuing insects outdoors; a larger shared activity exposed less consistent adaptation. The practical question is not whether group work happens, but whether each child can participate at a suitable level.
The nursery accepts children aged four months to five years. Its address is Ascot Community Free School, Ascot Road, Watford, WD18 8AD.
The provider record marks full-day and half-day availability and includes a weekday opening window. It does not establish current product names, session clock times within that window or booking requirements. Funding arrangements, meals, consumables and nursery-specific prices were also not verified in the available branch material. Families need the nursery’s present written quotation and a clear breakdown of what they provide or pay for separately.
Squirrels Nursery, Watford Ascot had a convincing inspection-era blend of warm relationships and purposeful learning. The insect hunt, number games and self-service routines show children learning through real activity rather than adult explanation alone. The improvement point around adapting group work prevents an unqualified endorsement.
It is best suited to families who value outdoor investigation, language-rich play and practical independence, whether seeking the recorded full-day or half-day availability. Both groups should verify the current session times and booking rules directly because the branch evidence does not establish those products in detail.
Ofsted judged it Good overall in March 2023. Children were extremely settled, and safeguarding arrangements were effective, although group activities did not always reflect every child's individual needs.
