Familiar adults, shared books and language woven into play defined Play Pals Childcare Atherton Road's July 2023 inspection account. This Hindley Green setting has capacity for 51 children, with a current age range of one month to three years. Its youngest children are central to the account: in July 2023, babies sought comfort from familiar practitioners, who joined them with books and followed their interests.
At its July 2023 inspection, Ofsted rated the nursery Good and judged safeguarding effective. That is a dated assessment, with practical reservations alongside the strengths: temporary-staff support, physical development and outdoor learning all needed further attention.
Morning, afternoon and full-day bookings provide different ways to use the nursery, with food included in each pattern.
The early years foundation stage sets the requirements for children's learning, development and care. For parents, that means a day in which play, conversation and everyday experiences contribute to learning, alongside the routines children need.
At the July 2023 inspection, Ofsted found communication and language teaching strong, with experienced practitioners adapting activities to children's individual learning needs. The examples make that assessment useful: during flower painting, adults introduced vocabulary for the plant's parts; songs, rhymes and selected stories gave children other opportunities to hear and practise language.
In July 2023, children also planted bedding plants in small pots themselves. That put exploration of the natural world into their hands. Play materials could serve more than one purpose: children moved from rolling a ball towards skittles to using the equipment for bat-and-ball play. The emphasis was on trying things and finding another use for familiar resources.
Physical activity had a more mixed picture. In July 2023, children manipulated dough while music played, exercising their hands and fingers in preparation for later writing. Older children wanting more demanding movement, however, needed better opportunities to develop balance, coordination and agility. Outdoor learning also required improvement. These are useful distinctions for parents: practical hand activities were evident, but the challenge offered through larger movements needed work.
In July 2023, established key staff took responsibility for children's care and learning. Familiar relationships provided continuity while temporary practitioners were also working at the setting. For a baby, the concrete detail matters: adults sat nearby to share books, and children sought physical comfort from people they knew.
Emotional experiences were brought into play, too. In July 2023, imaginative play helped children explore having a new baby in the family. This gave a familiar childhood change a place within the nursery day, rather than treating care and learning as separate tasks.
The staffing concern was specific. In July 2023, temporary practitioners did not consistently understand what their roles required because their monitoring and training were less effective. Established staff consequently carried extra pressure. Further coaching and support were among the improvement actions, so continuity of relationships and consistency of teaching deserve separate attention when choosing the setting.
Food is included in the session fee. Morning bookings cover breakfast, snacks and lunch; afternoon bookings include snacks and afternoon tea, while a full day combines those meals. That makes the food arrangement part of the attendance pattern families choose.
The address is 675 Atherton Road, Hindley Green, Wigan, WN2 4SD. Opening hours run from 7.30am until 6pm on weekdays. Care operates across 51 weeks annually, with a one-week closure in December.
The booking choices have clear boundaries: mornings run from 7.30am to 12.30pm, afternoons from 1pm to 6pm, and full days from 7.30am to 6pm. A morning therefore includes lunch, whereas an afternoon includes afternoon tea. These are different attendance options, rather than a single opening window presented as flexible care.
Branch enquiries can be made by telephone on 01942 294 350 or by email at Playpalsnurseryhg@quest-trust.org.uk. Current prices come in the nursery's written quotation; the session and fees page sets out the attendance choices and included food.
The nursery offers 15 and 30-hour funded places, subject to eligibility and availability, with meals included in funded provision. Families can purchase additional hours to extend their funded attendance.
Play Pals Childcare Atherton Road suits families seeking morning or afternoon sessions as well as those needing a full day, with meals built into each choice. Its July 2023 account gives parents concrete examples of language-rich play and familiar relationships with babies. The decision deserves equal attention to the improvement points: consistent temporary-staff practice and sufficiently challenging physical and outdoor activity.
