Beach exploration and growing vegetables give Small Steps at Park Road a clear West Kirby character. The group-wide Beach Explorers programme introduces children to the local coast, while group-wide Little Rakes Gardening takes them through sowing, growing and harvesting food. These are tangible ways to connect nursery learning with the world beyond the playroom.
At its May 2024 inspection, Ofsted judged the nursery Good and safeguarding effective, while identifying weaknesses in staff curriculum knowledge and confidence in guiding learning. That balance matters: there was much to value in children's experiences, alongside a clear requirement for more consistent teaching.
The nursery has capacity for 46 children, with a current age range of one month to five years. Its address is 2 Park Road, West Kirby, Wirral, CH48 4DW. Four named rooms organise the nursery journey, with familiar home routines for the youngest children and preparation for primary school among the oldest.
Full-day, morning and afternoon bookings give families different ways to use the setting.
Mini Explorers, for children aged six weeks to 16 months, maintains routines from home, giving babies continuity as they start childcare.
Explorers, for children aged 12 months to two years, has reading spaces softened with cushions and neutral-coloured rugs, providing a comfortable setting for books.
Discoverers, for two- to three-year-olds, uses children's immediate interests to shape activities and their next learning steps. Adventurers, for three- to four-year-olds, combines imaginative play with preparation for primary school.
The Early Years Foundation Stage Framework provides the foundation: children learn through play, developing communication, physical skills, early literacy and mathematics alongside understanding their surroundings and expressing ideas. It is the everyday educational framework, rather than an extra programme that distinguishes this nursery.
Alongside it sits the group-wide Curiosity Approach: Park Road uses open-ended resources instead of traditional toys to encourage imagination and curiosity. Children can decide what a resource might become in their play.
In May 2024, children investigated magnets, examined insects with magnifying glasses and made predictions while making raindrops, combining practical exploration with conversation.
That same month, children built car ramps together, used pipettes with water and transferred pasta and rice between containers. Pouring practice helped prepare toddlers to manage their own drinks.
There was also a specific teaching weakness in May 2024: some less-experienced staff lacked confidence in extending learning, and intended learning was not consistently clear. The improvement priorities were clearer curriculum understanding and targeted training. Interesting materials need purposeful adult support if activities are to build reliably on what a child already knows.
Beach Explorers applies Forest School principles to learning about the coastal environment around West Kirby beach, and includes children across the nursery's room stages. It gives the local shoreline an educational role, with the emphasis on discovering the surroundings rather than treating the beach simply as a destination.
Little Rakes Gardening involves children in planting and harvesting produce, while children also tend sensory plants such as lavender and herbs with differently textured leaves. The organic garden also supplies fruit and vegetables for nursery food. Growing, touching and using plants connects nature with everyday eating, giving children more than a picture-book introduction to where food comes from.
Outdoor access continues in different weather conditions. Suitable clothing therefore belongs in the family's nursery preparations, alongside the activities themselves. The attraction here is the connection between hands-on play, the garden and the coast.
For Mini Explorers, a key-person photograph, welcome pack and free settling sessions introduce the care relationship before attendance.
In Explorers, staff discuss room moves with parents when a child is ready, keeping families involved in the transition.
In May 2024, staff spent time getting to know children and used predictable daily routines. Babies joined in familiar songs and actions, while older children practised managing coats, shoes and toileting. These were everyday opportunities to take part and do more independently, with care and learning closely connected.
Food is cooked each morning in the nursery kitchens, with breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and snacks offered during the day; the nursery's food policy excludes nut products. Children also help with table preparation and serving, making meals another occasion to practise independence.
Health rules affect attendance as well as care. After vomiting or diarrhoea, children must remain at home until at least 48 hours have passed since the last episode. Families need a workable alternative for those periods, particularly because absence through illness does not reduce the nursery fee.
Preparation for school is part of Adventurers' provision. The nursery has links with local schools and the community, while the May 2024 examples of dressing and toileting practice show the practical side of becoming more independent. These arrangements concern preparation for the next stage, rather than an admissions advantage.
Full-day sessions run from 8am to 6pm. Morning sessions run from 8am to 1pm, and afternoon sessions from 1pm to 6pm. Those shorter patterns provide a different option from booking the whole day, while retaining a substantial block of nursery time.
Park Road opens Monday to Friday, for 51 weeks of the year, excluding bank holidays. An Early Start at 7.30am costs extra and must be booked ahead. The Christmas and New Year closure lasts five working days, so families using nursery through the year need to build that break into their childcare plans.
Parents collecting after an afternoon or full-day session must reach the nursery by 5.45pm to allow time for discussion before closing. The distinction between the session's finishing time and the requested collection time is important for a working-day schedule.
Enquiries can be made on 0151 625 8786 or through the contact form by selecting Park Road. A month's notice is required to end a place, and changes to agreed sessions require written notice of the same length. Fees continue during holidays and sickness, as well as the scheduled closures.
Funded childcare is offered, with terms referring to 15 or 30 hours per week according to age and eligibility. Funding is term-time only and distributed across each term. Additional hours, services, meals and resources outside the funded entitlement carry charges, so the funded portion and the family's overall booking need to be considered separately.
Meals and drinks are included in nursery fees, while meals outside funded entitlement are chargeable. Parents supply formula or other required dietary milk, plus nappies, wipes and creams until toilet training is complete. These home-supplied items remain part of the practical cost and preparation for attendance.
A registration charge is payable with the completed forms and is non-refundable if the child does not start. The deposit is reimbursed when a month's notice is given. Current prices come in the nursery's written quotation; the terms and conditions explain the charging and notice arrangements.
Park Road suits families who want either full-day attendance or morning and afternoon sessions, with learning that makes use of West Kirby's coast and nursery-grown produce. Beach Explorers and Little Rakes Gardening give the offer substance, while the youngest room's home routines and settling arrangements address a different parental priority: continuity of care.
The decision also needs to take account of the May 2024 curriculum improvement priorities and the April 2025 notification failure. For families drawn to practical exploration and staged independence, those are specific issues to weigh alongside the rooms, activities and booking arrangements.
Ofsted rated the nursery Good in May 2024 and judged safeguarding effective. Improvements were required in staff curriculum understanding and confidence in guiding learning.
The current age range is one month to five years. The rooms are Mini Explorers, Explorers, Discoverers and Adventurers; Mini Explorers' room band begins at six weeks.
Beach Explorers connects learning with the local coastal environment. Little Rakes Gardening involves children in sowing, growing and harvesting produce, alongside sensory planting.
