Nursery at Caldecott Primary School

A sand pit, climbing areas and a garden with sheltered space give Caldecott’s youngest children room for both energetic play and quieter moments. This is nursery provision within Caldecott Primary School in Abingdon, with two nursery classes for children aged 3–4 forming part of its Early Years provision. Swans is the room used for the funded nursery sessions. Children can join in the term following their third birthday.
For the 2025–2026 academic year, nursery capacity was 78 part-time equivalent places, with 30-hour places limited to 27 full-time equivalents. Those are different measures of capacity, rather than a single class size. Ofsted graded early years provision Good following the inspection on 28 February and 1 March 2023. That judgement covers the school’s early years provision.
Outdoor space gives the day several possibilities. The Foundation Stage garden has a shaded section, places to climb and a quiet corner, alongside its large sand pit. Covered areas and safety surfacing are practical features for young children’s play. Friends of Caldecott have also supplied sensory items for the nursery garden, adding another resource for exploration.
Weekly Forest School brings a further outdoor element, and nursery children need wellies for it. The school’s meadow contains an orchard and a Forest School area. Indoors, the youngest children have light, spacious areas between their classrooms; classrooms for ages 3–11 also have interactive touch screens.
Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) learning here includes participation in songs, action games and rhymes. In February and March 2023, nursery children joined these activities enthusiastically, including the two-year-olds attending then. That gives parents a concrete picture of early reading activity: children take part through sound and movement. Digiduck is used in EYFS to introduce online safety.
Learning to behave considerately starts in Nursery. In February and March 2023, children were learning positive behaviour from this early stage, making everyday relationships part of their education alongside learning activities.
Parents can arrange a conversation with their child’s teacher directly or through the office, rather than waiting for a formal parents’ evening. The school aims to involve parents throughout the planning and support of children with special educational needs, and to assess and review those needs regularly. This makes family involvement an explicit part of its approach to support.
Lunch can be a cooked meal with two courses, a sandwich lunch supplied by school, or a packed lunch brought from home. ABM prepares school meals in the on-site kitchen, and orders are made through Scopay. Vegetarian meals are available, with provision for special dietary requirements. For children using wraparound care, breakfast includes cereal or toast, while the after-school session includes a light tea.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through Oxfordshire County Council, in the autumn before their child is due to start school. There is no automatic transfer, so choosing the nursery and applying for school remain separate decisions.
Nursery and Reception belong to the same Foundation Stage, whose children have access to the specially designed garden. That shared setting is a feature of daily provision; it does not secure admission.
The booking pattern is a full week: eligible children take either 15 funded hours across five mornings or five afternoons, or 30 funded hours across Monday to Friday. Funded hours cannot be divided between this nursery and another provider.
Breakfast and after-school clubs offer care between 7.45am and 5.30pm for ages 3–11, subject to availability. Places are allocated in application order, with a waiting list when clubs are oversubscribed. Applications go to extendedday@caldecott.oxon.sch.uk. For nursery enquiries or a visit appointment, contact the office on 01235 523132 or admin.2605@caldecott.oxon.sch.uk. Uniform is optional for nursery children. There is no general on-site parking, although two disabled spaces are provided; families should park considerately on Caldecott Road and keep the smaller access road clear.
