At a Glance

Chrysalis Class combines a secure outdoor learning space with an early years unit shared with Wood White, Carswell’s Reception class. This is the nursery at Carswell Community Primary School in central Abingdon, with teachers and teaching assistants working across the shared provision.

Children can join in the term after their third birthday; the nursery age range is 3–5. There are 20 places, with an admission number expressed as 40 part-time equivalent places. Families can use either 15 funded hours or, where eligible, 30 hours. The distinction matters when choosing between shorter sessions and a longer nursery day.

The Nursery Day

Adult-guided activities sit alongside play that children initiate themselves, indoors and outside. Topics draw on children’s interests, giving their ideas a part in what they explore. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) provides the framework: learning includes communication, early literacy and maths, physical development and social skills. Development Matters guides expectations across seven learning areas.

Early reading begins with listening. Supersonic Phonics Friends includes Firm Foundations 1, where nursery children explore sounds through body percussion, instruments and noises around them. Rhyming and listening for sounds in words build the skills needed for later reading. Number, shape and pattern work sits alongside opportunities to practise talking, sharing and solving problems.

Outdoor learning has named places and a clear routine. Nursery children have opportunities for Forest School in Gardenorama, the school garden, or at Bayworth’s private woodland, a 10-minute minibus journey away. Wednesday morning sessions include waterproof clothing, a reminder of the rules, a snack and time for children to choose their exploration. Possible activities include minibeast searches, den-making and muddy play. Children change into dry uniform before lunch, so spare socks, underwear and bags for wet clothing have a practical purpose.

In February 2025, Ofsted found that early years children enjoyed reading and counting, sustained their attention and developed their understanding with staff support. Resources in the classrooms helped children practise language and number skills. These findings concern the shared early years provision.

Care and Support

Qualified teachers lead the shared early years unit, supported by teaching assistants. Kindness, safety and respect are the three rules introduced in EYFS, giving children simple expectations for playing and learning together.

Lunch can be a packed meal or a charged school meal. Dolce provides the school’s catering, while School Grid lets parents choose meals, inspect recipes and block dishes containing particular allergens. Catering staff have allergy-awareness training, and the school aims to accommodate special diets. Children eat in the dining room, where polite conversation, helping one another and table manners are encouraged.

For concerns about learning, parents start with the class teacher and can arrange contact with the SEN coordinator through the office. The school provides for communication, learning, emotional and physical needs. This gives families a route for discussing the support their child requires.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Parents must make a separate application through Oxfordshire County Council’s normal school admissions process, completing its form in the autumn before their child is due to start school. Plan for that application separately from nursery attendance.

Chrysalis shares the early years unit with Wood White. That shared setting is part of the nursery’s daily context; it does not create an automatic transfer into Reception.

Practical Information

Morning sessions run from 8:45am to 11:45am; afternoons run from 11:45am to 3:15pm and include lunch. The 15-hour pattern can comprise mornings or a combination of morning and afternoon sessions. Eligible children using 30 hours attend all day each day. Additional sessions can be purchased by families using the universal 15 hours, and funded hours cannot be divided with another provider.

Charged extras. Longer attendance and school lunches can incur charges. Ask the school for current charges before agreeing a pattern.

Breakfast Club begins at 7:45am, and Kids club runs from 3:15pm to 6:00pm. Breakfast care operates on weekdays in term time, with booking advised because places are limited. Kids club requires advance booking and does not run on the final days of terms 2, 4 and 6. Breakfast choices include yogurt, toast, cereal and fruit; after-school care includes small snacks.

The school office handles nursery enquiries and appointments to look around: call 01235 521578 or email office.2595@carswell.oxon.sch.uk.
