Nursery at Holy Trinity CofE Primary School

Last reviewed: October 2026 · Inspection data and key information above update regularly, however, this review below is refreshed bi-annually and may not reflect recent changes. Contact the nursery directly to confirm current arrangements. If you spot anything outdated or inaccurate, please let us know.

At a Glance

Songs, sound games and stories give Holy Trinity’s nursery its character. Children explore how instruments sound, learn to share classroom toys and practise talking together in small groups. This is a start built around communication and learning to be with others.

The nursery has 39 places for children from age three, within Holy Trinity CofE Primary School in Ashton-under-Lyne. Its Church of England identity sits alongside a welcome for families with any faith or none. Morning, afternoon and full-day patterns give families different ways to organise attendance.

The Nursery Day

Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) learning here includes listening, conversation and practical exploration. The nursery’s autumn topics include Nursery Rhymes and Me and my family: familiar starting points for children learning about themselves and getting to know classmates. Maths activities involve grouping and pairing objects and recognising colours, bringing early mathematical ideas into hands-on tasks.

Phase 1 phonics focuses on listening. Children experiment with instruments, make sounds with their bodies and notice sounds nearby. Small-group conversations, songs and stories give them opportunities to develop vocabulary and listen to other children. In February 2023, Ofsted found that early-years children paid attention and managed established routines, while staff used storytelling, singing and rhymes to develop language.

Books add named characters to that work. Nursery reading includes SuperDaisy, SuperTato, Dinosaurs Stomp and Dinosaurs Roar; older Reading Buddies also share stories with nursery children. Classroom libraries allow children to explore books during the day. Charanga Creative Music includes nursery units such as Rainbow Magic and Bounce To Action. Cooking experiences introduce food preparation and healthy eating, while the Manchester Diocese 2023 syllabus brings religious stories and festivals into play through miniature-world activities, games and role play.

Curriculum precision. The February 2023 inspection identified insufficient detail about intended knowledge, vocabulary and skills in some subjects, explicitly including early years, alongside unclear learning endpoints in some subjects. These weaknesses matter because teaching needs clear steps and checks before children progress.

Care and Support

Learning to use the classroom and share toys forms part of the nursery’s welcome for new children. Parents can contact the nursery team at nursery.teacher@holytrinity.tameside.sch.uk or speak to staff once the children have left. That gives families a direct route for discussing classroom life.

A snack is provided each day. Contributions are voluntary, and choosing not to contribute does not affect attendance or funded hours. Children attending full days under the 30-hour entitlement can have school lunch; families may opt out of chargeable extras and provide alternatives where appropriate, including a packed lunch.

The wider school support structure includes a SENDCO and deputy SENDCO, with individual education plans reviewed with parents each term. Two trained Emotional Literacy Support Assistants provide individual or small-group emotional support. Parents can raise concerns with their child’s teacher or the support team. The EYFS lead also holds a deputy safeguarding role, connecting early-years provision to the school’s safeguarding team.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must apply separately through Tameside Metropolitan Borough Council’s online admissions process. Treat this as a fresh application rather than an automatic continuation of nursery attendance.

Practical Information

Morning sessions run from 8:45am to 11:45am, afternoons from 12:15pm to 3:15pm, and full days from 8:45am to 3:15pm. The 15-hour funded pattern uses morning or afternoon sessions; the 30-hour pattern uses five full days, Monday to Friday, for eligible working families.

Funded attendance carries no compulsory additional payment or top-up charge. Meals, consumables and occasional trips or experiences are optional extras, with families able to decline them while retaining funded attendance. Contact the school for current charges.

Nursery applications go through the school office, which also arranges visits. Email admin@holytrinity.tameside.sch.uk or call 0161 330 1065. Uniform includes a red cardigan or sweatshirt and a white shirt or polo shirt; nursery children may wear plain jogging bottoms. This gives younger children a practical clothing option for the day’s activities.
