Paint, glue and mud belong in the picture at Livingstone’s nursery. Clothing advice explicitly anticipates messy activities, while the school grounds include a Forest School area for younger children. This is nursery provision within Livingstone Primary School in Mossley, with a practical emphasis on making, exploring and learning outdoors.
The school has a class for each year group, including Nursery. For parents, the useful distinction is between joining this nursery and securing a later school place: those decisions follow separate application routes.
Forest School gives outdoor learning a concrete setting within the grounds. Younger children make feeders for birds, fashion small woodland figures from clay and build shelters for stick characters. These activities give exploration a purpose: children handle natural materials and turn ideas into things they can make. The approach aims to develop independence and confidence through experience of the natural world.
Mathematics follows White Rose Maths throughout the year groups, including early years. Concepts are introduced in small stages, with physical materials and pictures helping children understand ideas before moving towards abstract methods. For a parent, that means mathematical learning involves handling and discussing, rather than simply memorising procedures.
Ofsted’s March 2022 inspection found that early-years learning had defined knowledge goals and that teachers used ongoing assessment to shape subsequent teaching. The same assessment called for sharper curriculum priorities and better checking of lasting recall in some subjects across the school; these were school-wide concerns, rather than findings assigned specifically to Nursery.
Stay and Play sessions in the early years help parents understand learning expectations and ways to support children at home. They provide a shared activity through which families can connect nursery learning with home life.
Support for additional needs begins before entry where a child already has an identified need. A meeting with parents, and other agencies where necessary, allows provision to be planned in advance. Once support is in place, a One-Page Pupil Profile records the child’s needs and the strategies to use. Families meet staff at least once each term to review progress and agree the next steps.
The school’s Assess-Plan-Do-Review process makes support an ongoing conversation. Parents can raise concerns with the class teacher, and the SEND coordinator can be reached through the office. Speech and Language professionals may contribute where appropriate.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Parents must make a separate application through the normal Reception route: Livingstone directs families to apply online through Tameside.
For the September 2026 intake, the application deadline was 15 January 2026. That cycle is now past. Choosing Nursery should therefore be treated as a decision about the nursery experience, with the later Reception application handled separately.
The arrival window runs from 8.45 to 8.55am, and Nursery finishes at 3pm. Learning begins as children join their classroom, while different finishing times across the school are intended to reduce crowding at collection.
Uniform is optional for Nursery. Joggers are recommended to make toilet training easier, and clothing needs to cope with messy play. Nursery enquiries go directly to the school office, which manages the places: telephone 01457 832495 or email admin@livingstone.tameside.sch.uk.
