Books, conversation and movement give this nursery its character. Micklehurst All Saints’ Nursery class forms part of the Church of England primary school at The Rowans in Mossley. Its early learning combines getting along with other children, developing language and being physically active: practical foundations for taking part in a classroom community.
Early reading begins with enjoying language. In April 2023, Ofsted found that Nursery children were introduced to books, words and the sounds that letters make. Hearing and saying those sounds gives children something concrete to practise before the next stage of learning to read. Enjoyment comes first.
Within the early years foundation stage, the emphasis on language sits alongside physical activity and learning to cooperate. These are everyday skills with an immediate purpose: children need to communicate with adults and other children, take part together and develop confidence in movement. The nursery’s curriculum therefore reaches beyond preparation for reading.
Named activities add detail to that picture. The June 2026 calendar included Little Bikers for Nursery and Reception on 12 June. A joint visit to Cockfield's Farm was also scheduled for 10 July 2026. These were dated activities, rather than promises about what every future nursery cohort will do, but they illustrate experiences planned alongside classroom learning.
Curriculum planning. The April 2023 inspection identified two early years weaknesses: some intended knowledge needed clearer definition, and some subject leaders needed a better understanding of how learning begins in the early years. That matters because staff need a clear sequence of what to teach and assess, while leaders need enough understanding to support and challenge their planning. Both concerns belong alongside the positive picture of language, movement and cooperation.
Relationships provide a foundation for participation. In April 2023, interactions between early years staff and children were positive, supporting the social side of learning alongside the emphasis on cooperation.
The calendar listed an evening for new Nursery and Reception parents and carers on 16 June 2026.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through Tameside Local Authority, following its normal application timetable. Nursery applications go directly to the school; the two routes are distinct. Treat choosing the nursery and applying for Reception as separate decisions.
The calendar scheduled a joint farm trip for Nursery and Reception. That planned connection is separate from entitlement to a school place.
The school office handles nursery enquiries and can arrange a visit before an application. A nursery application form can be collected from school or downloaded from its admissions page, giving families two ways to begin the process.
