On a ridge above the River Axe in eastern Devon, Axminster serves a wide rural catchment across East Devon and the Devon-Somerset border. Around 8,000 people live in and around the town today, drawn to a compact market centre that has given its name to high-quality patterned carpets since the eighteenth century. The weekly market still runs every Thursday.
Shute is among the most school-competitive pockets for families seeking rural primary places, while Axminster itself draws pupils from across the valley. Chardstock adds to the rural spread of the catchment. South Western Railway services connect the town to Exeter in around forty minutes.
