Two half-day sessions give the Assessment Nursery at Frank Wise School its practical shape. This is early provision within a community special school in Banbury, with children starting from age two. The school groups children by age and describes individualised learning and inclusion as central to its approach. For families, that means considering the nursery as part of a specialist school setting, with a child's own needs guiding the learning.
Learning is planned around individual needs. Teaching programmes are planned and delivered around each child's individual needs, and the school says its curriculum changes in response to children's needs. For families, the focus is on how learning is adapted for their child.
Inclusion extends beyond the school site. Frank Wise provides mainstream learning opportunities each week for all its pupils, bringing contact with mainstream education into its specialist approach. Within the school grounds, the Hydrotherapy Pool measures 11 metres by 5 metres and stays at 33 degrees Celsius. Its school-level purpose is swimming teaching and therapy.
Food can be brought from home as a packed lunch, or families can arrange a school dinner. Frank Wise caters for all dietary requirements and supports children with feeding difficulties using advice from the Speech and Language Therapy service. For a child whose mealtimes need additional support, feeding is therefore a care consideration alongside the choice of lunch.
Families can receive the school's half-termly newsletter by email by requesting a copy on 01295 263520. This provides regular school news alongside the child's nursery experience.
A separate next step. Attending the nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Ask the school how the next placement is arranged and what steps your family needs to take. Choosing the nursery and securing the next school place are separate decisions; nursery attendance should not be treated as an offer of a Reception place.
Morning sessions run from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm; afternoon sessions run from 12:35 pm to 3:35 pm. Assessment Nursery children may arrive from the start of their respective session. These are half-day arrangements for children below statutory school age, so the morning and afternoon patterns are the relevant times for planning nursery attendance.
