A second-birthday start gives this on-site pre-school its distinctive practical appeal: children can join Barrow Island Community Primary School from age two and remain until the term when they begin Reception. This is the school's own provision, on its Trinity Street site in Barrow-in-Furness.
The curriculum is tailored to the pre-school's children; its published 2024-25 documents cover language, literacy, mathematics, physical development and understanding the world. For parents, that provides a useful picture of the learning priorities alongside the choice of hours.
The pre-school's published 2024-25 curriculum documents include Communication and Language alongside Literacy. Mathematics has its own document, as do Understanding the World and Physical Development. The emphasis therefore extends beyond early reading and number work to children's communication, movement and knowledge of their surroundings.
At the inspection on 18 April 2024, children in the early years participated eagerly in songs and rhymes. That is a concrete glimpse of learning through shared language and sound. It also gives parents a simple connection with home: familiar songs and rhymes offer something to enjoy together beyond the pre-school session.
Support for additional needs includes the pre-school within the school's SEND provision, which welcomes children from two. Staff work with families and outside professionals, using individual support and planned interventions to address barriers to participation and learning.
The needs covered include physical disabilities, learning difficulties described as moderate or severe, and social, emotional and mental health needs. Parents can arrange a discussion with the SEND team through the school office. This gives families a direct route to discuss their child's needs with the team responsible for support.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process and meet its deadline. Choosing the pre-school and securing a school place are separate decisions.
Keep that distinction in mind when planning ahead: the pre-school's starting age and hours describe the nursery offer, rather than an entitlement to continue into the school's Reception class.
Applications can be made for 15 or 30 hours, depending on individual circumstances. Pre-school staff and the school office handle enquiries about these places, giving parents a direct contact for the provision.
The office can be reached on (01229) 820302 or at admin@barrowisland.cumbria.sch.uk. The address is Trinity Street, Barrow-in-Furness, LA14 2SJ.
Parking. On-site parking is limited; the school's directions identify surrounding residential roads as an alternative with two hours of free parking. Families travelling by car should factor that limitation into their journey planning.
