Saying sounds and signing them gives Chetwynde’s nursery a distinctive starting point for early reading. Play and learning alongside adults also matter here. This is the nursery provision within Chetwynde School on Rating Lane in Barrow-in-Furness, where the school’s intake starts at age three.
Ofsted graded the school’s early years provision Good at the inspection on 7 and 8 November 2023. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery inspection outcome.
Play sits alongside activities with adults. In November 2023, early years children had thoughtfully planned opportunities for both, giving them different ways to engage with learning. For parents, the useful distinction is that the nursery experience includes adult involvement as well as play.
Early reading starts in Nursery. Children practise sounds through speech and signs, making this a concrete part of their learning rather than simply an aim for later schooling. The November 2023 findings describe carefully selected sounds: the emphasis is on what children practise, with signing accompanying the spoken work.
Children’s willingness to participate matters too. In November 2023, children in early years approached learning positively and were keen to join activities. This supports a picture of children taking an active part in their education. These are the clearest features of the early years foundation stage experience here: learning through play, working with adults and beginning sound practice.
A primary SEND team forms part of the school’s support structure. Chetwynde says support is shaped around each child’s needs, with parents involved in working out the approach. Where appropriate, the teams involve outside agencies. For a family whose child needs additional help, that partnership is the relevant starting point.
Cumbria SEND Information, Advice and Support Service (SENDIASS) also offers parents impartial help, including preparation for meetings and support during them. This gives families a route to advice alongside their conversations with school staff.
School safeguarding procedures direct concerns to the designated safeguarding lead or deputy. Staff and visitors wear identification lanyards, and doors should have clear glass panels or remain open. Those arrangements support adult visibility and a clear route for raising concerns.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through the normal local authority route and meet the deadline for their entry year.
For the September 2023 intake, nursery attendance carried no oversubscription priority. That cycle used a local authority Common Application Form, with a Reception deadline of 15 January 2023. Both dates are past. The practical implication remains clear: choosing nursery and applying for Reception are separate decisions and processes.
