Play, exploration and conversation shape the nursery experience at Vange Primary School and Nursery. Children can join after their third birthday, and the provision operates five days a week. Nursery sits within the school's Class 1 early years provision, alongside Reception, giving it a place within the school from the start.
At the November 2022 Ofsted inspection, early years provision was graded Good. That judgement covers the school's early years provision rather than a separately inspected nursery.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) combines planned learning with opportunities to explore and play. For parents, that means attention to how children communicate, move, manage feelings and relate to other people, alongside early mathematical ideas, literacy, creative work and discovery about their surroundings. Learning extends beyond letters and numbers.
Language development was a clear focus at the November 2022 inspection: adult questioning helped children build vocabulary. Teachers also assessed learning through activities, providing checks on understanding alongside play. For children, this combined opportunities to talk with adult attention to what they had learned.
The school grounds include playing fields edged by trees and overlook Basildon Golf Course. These are features of the wider site. Across the school's curriculum, the November 2022 improvement priority was more detailed planning in a small number of subjects, where gaps limited opportunities to deepen knowledge.
Settling was a strength of early years in November 2022: children adjusted quickly, and adults supported them well. This offers reassurance about the start of the experience, with the finding tied to that inspection period.
For ongoing contact, parents can email the nursery team at nursery@vange.essex.sch.uk. School Jotter carries notices and newsletters, and families receive a calendar booklet at the start of each term. Keeping an email address up to date helps parents receive information about events.
The wider school team includes a SENCO, inclusion assistants and learning support assistants. Medical arrangements require parental paperwork: medicine requires staff agreement and signed parental consent. Only an appointed person administers it, and only when work commitments or distance prevent parents from giving it themselves. Doses given are logged. Staff receive regularly refreshed first aid training, including paediatric first aid, giving medical care a defined procedure rather than an informal arrangement.
A separate application matters. Attending nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must apply again through the normal Reception process, submitting an application to the local authority by the date on the form. Essex County Council handles the route; the school cannot allocate places directly to parents.
Being part of the school's early years provision and obtaining a Reception place are separate matters. Families should treat the Reception application as a fresh step even when their child already attends nursery.
Nursery applications begin with an online interest form, after which a team member contacts the family. General enquiries go to admin@vange.essex.sch.uk or 01268 552160. The school is on London Road in Basildon, SS16 4QA.
Early years uniform includes a white polo, grey trousers or shorts, or a navy skirt or pinafore. The knitted jumper is navy with a V-neck; sweatshirts are excluded. Families can reuse clothing through the school's pre-loved uniform sale, making that a practical option when preparing for nursery.
Children may attend after their third birthday. The nursery opens five days a week.
Complete the online nursery interest form. A member of the team will then contact you.
No. You must make a separate Reception application to the local authority by the date on the application form. The school cannot offer Reception places directly.

At the inspection on 16 and 17 November 2022, early years provision was graded Good. This was an early years judgement within the school's inspection, rather than a separate nursery inspection.
