Little Explorers gives two-year-olds their own morning provision, alongside Foundation Year 1, Carlinghow Academy’s nursery. The distinction matters for family routines: Little Explorers has a morning timetable, while the nursery has both morning and afternoon sessions. Both sit within the academy on Ealand Road in Batley.
Ofsted rated the school’s early years provision Good following its inspection on 24 and 25 May 2022. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating.
Classroom learning areas and outdoor space give children different places to pursue activities. In May 2022, children used these spaces purposefully and sustained their attention through to finishing what they were doing. This is a picture of active participation, with children learning to share and work out agreements with one another alongside their individual activities.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) is the nursery’s curriculum framework. Here, the practical emphasis includes building knowledge in stages, developing language and learning how to cooperate. Nursery planning has two cycles, Cycle A and Cycle B, giving this provision its own planning structure within the school.
Language was the important development point in May 2022. Adults needed to make vocabulary more precise, expand children’s language through conversation and give them more chances to explain their knowledge. For parents, the distinction is useful: completing an activity matters, but so does being able to talk about it and remember the learning afterwards.
An EYFS leadership role combines responsibility for early years and reading. The wider school team also includes a SENDCo, nursery nurses and pastoral staff. These are school team roles, rather than a promise about which adult will work with an individual nursery child.
Communication has clear channels. Seesaw carries learning news and guidance for activities at home; Arbor handles reminders, urgent notices and changes to arrangements. Personal concerns go through the school office rather than the learning platform, allowing families to discuss sensitive matters directly with staff. Parents can also telephone to request a return call or arrange a meeting.
Children under five receive free school milk through the Nursery Milk scheme. This is a specific provision for younger children, separate from the meal arrangements for older pupils. For SEND enquiries, families can contact the school’s SENDCo through the office. The school also has full disability access.
Attending the nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route and meet the applicable deadline. Treat choosing the nursery and applying for Reception as two separate decisions: participation in nursery learning does not itself secure the next place.
Little Explorers runs from 08:45 to 11:45. Foundation Year 1 nursery sessions run from 08:45 to 11:45 in the morning and 12:15 to 15:15 in the afternoon. These session boundaries are the useful starting point when matching nursery attendance to work and other family commitments.
The school office handles enquiries on 01924 326371, and families are welcome to arrange a school visit through the office. Breakfast club is for children over five, so it should not be counted as nursery morning care.
