Opened by public subscription as a mechanics' institute in 1854, Batley Town Hall's neoclassical facade still anchors this West Yorkshire market town in the Kirklees district, set within the former Heavy Woollen District south-west of Leeds. Purlwell is among the most sought-after pockets for primary catchments, and families in central Batley draw on a competitive spread of primary places across the district. Birstall and Carlinghow form the outer fringe. Batley station sits on the Leeds-Huddersfield line, putting Leeds city centre within roughly twenty minutes by rail; Batley Field Hill occupies the higher ground to the south. Around 49,000 people lived in the town at the 2011 census, and the Batley Variety Club made Batley a concert draw from 1967 onwards.
