A dolls house, dragons and questions about melting ice give Little Stars its character: this is a nursery built around play, conversation and choosing what to explore. It belongs to Warwick Road Primary School in Batley and takes children from age three, with morning and full-day patterns.
The nursery forms part of the school's Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). In May 2024, Ofsted found that children across early years became confident quickly, built close connections with adults and enjoyed their learning. That gives families a useful picture of the early-years experience, rather than a separate nursery rating.
Children can choose resources and move between activity areas, while adults also lead planned experiences. Carpet gatherings introduce a theme and give children ideas to take into their play. Questions such as why ice melts or whether chocolate belongs at breakfast connect learning to things young children can discuss and investigate.
The EYFS brings together learning to communicate, move confidently and manage feelings with early number work, reading, creativity and discovering the world. Here, that translates into construction, pretend play, making marks and exploring materials. Sand, water and playdough offer different ways to experiment; a dolls house and small-world figures provide starting points for stories. Outdoor provision is also part of the nursery's activity areas.
Twinkl Phonics begins in nursery. Children practise language and early literacy during free-flow sessions as well as being taught in groups informed by assessments. Books go home for adults and children to enjoy together, with exchanges on Thursdays and space for parents to comment in the reading record. Shared reading has a practical place in the week.
Creative work extends beyond pictures. Early-years activities include making towers and models, choosing tools and baking. Music involves listening to rhymes, tapping rhythms and inventing songs. For mathematics, Development Matters guides early-years learning, with White Rose Maths principles supporting the sequence. Adult teaching and practical exploration sit alongside opportunities for children to use number and shape ideas in their play.
Starting nursery is handled gradually. Entry is staggered by birthdate, giving staff time to help children adjust. Parents are welcome inside the classroom at morning drop-off to help their child settle. A nursery teacher and an educational teaching assistant make up the classroom team.
Praise, stickers and visual behaviour prompts help children understand expectations. Parents can raise concerns directly with staff, and a private conversation can be arranged. The EYFS lead also holds senior SEND coordination and deputy safeguarding responsibilities, linking early-years leadership with these support roles.
Milk and fruit are provided as a free daily snack. Full-day children can bring a packed lunch or book a separately charged school dinner, with payment through ParentPay. Meat served by the school is Halal and HMC approved. Nursery pupils also receive free breakfast.
Support for additional needs. The May 2024 inspection identified a school-wide concern that some teaching did not adjust sufficiently to pupils' SEND, potentially limiting progress. Families should discuss how learning will be adapted to their child's needs before starting.
Attending Little Stars does not guarantee a Reception place at Warwick Road. Families must make a separate application through Kirklees, which handles Reception admissions. Treat choosing the nursery and applying for school as separate decisions.
For entry in September 2027, the online application window runs from 1 September 2026 to 15 January 2027. Apply through the Kirklees primary school admissions service by that closing date. Familiarity with nursery life does not replace this application.
Morning sessions provide 15 hours across Monday to Friday, running from 8:30 to 11:30. The collection instruction is earlier: parents should collect at 11:25. Full-day sessions run from 8:30 to 15:15 under the 30-hour offer, subject to eligibility. The 15-hour free education offer starts in the term after a child's third birthday, provided a place is available.
Collection must be by someone over 16 whom nursery staff know. Application forms can be obtained from the office or downloaded, then returned with the specified birth certificate and proof of address. For nursery enquiries, telephone 01924 455 593 or email office.warwickroad@kirkleeseducation.uk.
