At a Glance

An early years base of its own, with outdoor space attached, gives Kingsley’s youngest children a distinct place within the school. Kingsley Nursery & Preschool belongs to Kingsley School Devon in Bideford. The physical arrangement puts indoor activities and outdoor recreation alongside one another, a useful feature for families who want both to be part of their child’s day.

The ISI inspection of 7 to 9 November 2023 found good progress across abilities in early years, alongside provision that met children’s social and emotional needs. Those findings concern the early years provision within the school.

The Nursery Day

Structure and children’s interests work together here. In November 2023, early years teaching followed carefully organised lessons, while staff changed their plans in response to what interested the children. For a parent, that means planned learning with room for a child’s curiosity to influence the activities. Assessment was systematic, giving staff a framework for following children’s development.

Learning extended beyond the classroom. Children participated enthusiastically in activities outdoors as well as indoors, making the attached outdoor space relevant to learning as well as recreation. Their engagement and progress were both strengths of the early years findings.

Social learning also has practical expression. Children learn to listen to other people, wait for their turn and share. Helping a teacher or taking a class captain role gives them a small responsibility of their own. These are concrete ways to practise participation in a group, rather than treating social development as a separate lesson.

Care and Support

Relationships matter in the daily experience. In November 2023, early years children had close connections with staff who understood where they were confident and where they needed help. Children also recognised one another’s needs. This gives the care picture a personal dimension: adults know the children, and children learn consideration for their peers.

All early years staff had paediatric first aid training at that time, a specific qualification relevant to caring for young children.

Breakfast, tea and lunch appear as separate nursery charges in the school’s fee schedule. Families should account for meals alongside the nursery day charge, and consult the school for current charges.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Ask the admissions team to confirm the Reception application requirements and timing for nursery families. Kingsley’s general application process uses an Admissions Account to complete admissions. Keep the decision about the nursery day separate from the decision about your child’s next school place.

Practical Information

The nursery fee schedule uses a daily charge. Holiday attendance also needs advance booking. For the nursery’s 2026–27 calendar, the autumn term ends on 18 December 2026, with additional opening on 21 and 22 December. February half-term opening runs from 15 to 19 February 2027; summer holiday opening includes 28 July to 13 August 2027. These dates help families plan care beyond the main terms.

To enquire, use the Admissions Enquiry Form or call 01237 426200, option 1. The admissions team arranges school visits, giving families a direct way to explore the nursery before progressing an application.
