Songs, shared play and the small achievement of helping a friend with a coat give Holy Rosary’s early years provision its character. The nursery caters for three-year-olds within Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary Catholic Academy on Rievaulx Avenue in Billingham, a Catholic primary school.
At the Ofsted inspection on 11 and 12 March 2025, early years provision was graded Good. This judgement covers the school’s early years provision, rather than a separately inspected nursery.
Morning and afternoon sessions each provide a defined part of the day. Children in the early years learn poems alongside rhymes and songs, bringing spoken language into their learning. Play happens outside as well as inside. In March 2025, children played together cooperatively and supported one another with putting on coats, persisting when the task became difficult. These are useful everyday opportunities to practise independence and helping others.
Early reading deserves a closer look. In March 2025, some early years phonics tasks did not fit children’s existing knowledge closely enough. Phonics matching. Activities need to suit the sounds a child already understands; this was an early years weakness within the Good judgement and matters when considering the nursery’s approach to beginning reading.
Support for special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) includes a route for parents to raise developmental concerns. Staff working with young children are expected to respond to emerging difficulties, with the SEND coordinator organising provision and parents informed when additional educational support begins. Children with SEND are to participate alongside their peers.
Visual timetables are used across the school’s classrooms to help children anticipate what comes next. Adaptive teaching changes the support around learning according to individual needs. Where additional help is needed, an Assess, Plan, Do, Review tracker records needs, goals, classroom strategies and progress. Reviews take place termly, or sooner when necessary, with opportunities for parents to discuss changes with the teacher. This gives families a recurring point to contribute to their child’s support.
Toilet training. Children are required to be fully toilet trained before nursery entry. Families should factor this condition into their plans for starting.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place and confers no priority for September 2027 entry. Families must make a separate application using the Common Application Form through their home local authority. For that entry cycle, the deadline is 15 January 2027. Treat this as a separate decision and deadline, even if your child already attends nursery.
Morning nursery runs from 8.30am to 11.30am; the afternoon runs from noon to 3pm. Families can express a preference for Morning, Afternoon or 30 Hours when applying. A preferred session cannot always be allocated, so the eventual allocation matters for childcare planning.
