Two three-hour sessions shape nursery life at Prior's Mill: a morning group and an afternoon group, each with space for 39 children. The 78-place provision welcomes three- and four-year-olds, with entry after a child's third birthday. It sits within the Church of England primary school on Clifton Avenue in Billingham.
The school's Christian values have a named expression, the Prior's Promise. Prior's Mill describes these values as part of its curriculum and school life, giving families a clear sense of the wider setting's religious character.
Morning nursery runs from 8.30am to 11.30am; the afternoon session starts at 12.10pm and finishes at 3.10pm. Each occupies a distinct part of the day, so families choose between a morning and an afternoon pattern rather than treating the two as one continuous session.
Movement is one concrete strand of the early years foundation stage (EYFS) curriculum. Children work on balance, coordination and strength, alongside learning to move safely around obstacles and other people. Running, climbing, hopping and dancing feature in the physical learning goals, including movement to music. For parents, this means physical development includes both energetic activity and awareness of others sharing the space.
Support for communication and participation forms part of the school's approach to inclusion. Teachers help children with language and literacy needs, use sensory experiences in learning and support children in managing emotions. These are school-wide arrangements, relevant to families considering how their child's needs will be discussed alongside nursery attendance.
All school staff undertake safeguarding training annually. Senior leaders form the safeguarding team, and Prior's Mill participates in Operation Encompass with Cleveland Police to support children affected by domestic abuse.
A school-wide food restriction prohibits nuts and products containing nuts because some children have severe allergies. This is a practical consideration for anything families send into school.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. For September 2027 entry, parents must make a separate application using their home local authority's common application form, returning it by 15 January 2027. Attending this nursery does not remove that requirement.
There is, however, a specific admissions priority: children attending Prior's Mill nursery at the time of admission assessment fall within the fifth oversubscription category, ahead of other children in the sixth category. Earlier categories take precedence, and distance separates applicants within categories where necessary. The useful distinction for families is between a place in the priority order and a guaranteed offer.
The nursery offers a free place of 15 hours per week through either session. Applications go to the school using a Nursery Application Form, obtainable from the office or Forms page.
Morning gates open at 8.20am; afternoon gates open at 12.10pm. Foundation Stage children must have an adult with them on the school site. Scooter and bicycle bays provide storage, and riding on site is prohibited.
