Nursery at Wolviston Primary School

Last reviewed: October 2026 · Inspection data and key information above update regularly, however, this review below is refreshed bi-annually and may not reflect recent changes. Contact the nursery directly to confirm current arrangements. If you spot anything outdated or inaccurate, please let us know.

At a Glance

Listening for sounds in the school grounds and discussing why bears hibernate give Wolviston’s nursery its character: early learning built around language, stories and conversation. The nursery has 24 places, with morning and afternoon provision. Children usually join in the term after turning three.

Within the school’s early years provision, the nursery prepares children for their next stage through listening and social learning. Ofsted judged early years Outstanding at the inspection on 14 and 15 January 2025. That judgement covers the school’s early years provision rather than a separately inspected nursery.

The Nursery Day

Language gives the learning its direction. In January 2025, children were absorbed in planned activities and confidently explained their learning to others. A winter theme introduced vocabulary about hibernation, giving children words with which to explain ideas rather than simply name objects.

Sound discrimination begins in nursery, both indoors and in the school grounds. Children practise hearing differences between sounds, while story discussions encourage them to listen closely and think about a book’s themes. These are concrete foundations for later reading. The January 2025 findings identified nursery listening and story work as exceptionally effective preparation for Reception.

The early years foundation stage also involves learning how to be with other children. Staff teach sharing, taking turns and cooperative play. Alongside vocabulary and listening, those everyday interactions develop the social skills children need to participate in a group.

Care and Support

Starting nursery is gradual: entry is phased across several weeks. Parents are invited to a welcome meeting before their child begins, providing an opportunity to discuss the move into nursery. The staffing structure includes an Early Years Lead and a part-time nursery teacher.

For children staying through lunch under the 30-hour provision, families provide a packed lunch. Family reading gives parents a way to participate in early years learning, an opportunity identified in January 2025.

Additional needs have a defined route for discussion. Parents begin with the class teacher, with the SENDCo involved where needed. Individualised Support Plans are developed with parents, and formal SEND reviews take place three times a year. Speech and Language Therapy and Educational Psychology are among the specialist assessment routes considered when concerns persist despite intervention. For families, this creates a process for agreeing support and reviewing its impact.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through Stockton-on-Tees Local Authority and meet the deadline for their child’s admission year; nursery enrolment does not replace that application.

Preparation for the move is a separate matter. Children take part in transition activities when progressing to their next year group, even where a classroom change is unnecessary. The nursery’s sound work and story discussions also prepare children for Reception learning. These educational benefits should be considered separately from the allocation of places.

Practical Information

Morning and afternoon places are offered, with additional provision extending through lunch into the afternoon. The funding arrangement distinguishes 15 hours for all children from a further 15 hours subject to eligibility. Families seeking the additional funded hours apply through Childcare Choices, then give the school their eligibility code and National Insurance number for verification. Applications for additional provision must be completed in the preceding term.

Additional hours can also be paid for where families are ineligible for the extended funding. Contact the school for current charges. Children using the 30-hour provision can access Breakfast Club and After School Club, extending care around their early years sessions.

Nursery applications are sent to enquiries@wolviston.org.uk. To arrange a school tour, email the same address or telephone 01740 644374.
