Nursery at Eldwick Primary School

A school garden, woods and time to choose their own play give Eldwick’s nursery its character. STREAM is the nursery class within Eldwick Primary School’s early years provision in Bingley. Its curriculum puts communication, physical development and learning to manage feelings and relationships first. For parents, that means the emphasis is on the skills children use throughout the day, as well as early literacy and number work.
Play provides the main route into learning. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) brings education and care together: children develop language, movement and social skills alongside maths, literacy, creativity and understanding their surroundings. Eldwick combines activities children choose themselves with brief whole-class teaching and work in smaller groups. Adults introduce ideas and demonstrate skills, then children have opportunities to explore them through play.
Topics and focus stories give learning a shared starting point, while activities can change to reflect children’s interests. The nursery’s provision plans cover construction and small-world play, a home corner, creative activities, sand, water and writing. These give children different ways to investigate an idea, rather than relying on one kind of task.
Outside, regular walks include the school garden and woods. These spaces bring movement and exploration into the learning day. In April 2024, Ofsted described calm, respectful interactions in early years, development of advanced vocabulary and adults who understood how to support learning in the environment. Nursery children also undertook activities preparing them for phonics.
Starting nursery is treated as a gradual process involving families, previous providers and the early years team. The Nursery Ready booklet suggests skills to practise at home, while recognising that children develop at different rates. This gives families practical preparation without treating readiness as a single fixed starting point.
Tapestry keeps parents involved in daily learning. Nursery families receive a Monday outline of the week’s planned learning, plus a weekly observation from an activity led by an adult. Parents can contribute photographs, videos and observations from home. Individual Next Steps are shared through Tapestry, so families can support the same goal, such as fastening a coat or waiting for a turn.
For developmental concerns, the class teacher, SENCO and early years lead discuss support with parents; outside agencies may also be involved. SEND enquiries go to inclusion@eldwick.bradford.sch.uk, giving families a direct contact route.
Optional snacks are offered morning and afternoon for an additional charge. Examples include vegetables, fruit, yoghurt, cheese and eggs, with milk or water. Families are asked to provide packed lunches, although the nursery meal information also offers a hot lunch option in the school dining room. Agree the lunch arrangement when booking. The school operates a nut-free policy because of severe allergies.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place or confer priority under the listed admission criteria. These rank children using sibling connections, priority areas and distance. Every family must make a separate Reception application through Bradford Council’s online system, including families already using Eldwick’s nursery. The deadline falls in January, with allocations issued in April.
Familiarity is supported separately from admission. Nursery children spend time in Reception before the move, and a transition session includes children and their families. These experiences help introduce the next classroom; they do not replace the application process.
Morning nursery runs from 8:50am to 11:50am; afternoon provision runs from 12:20pm to 3:20pm. A lunchtime session bridges them. Early Birds extends care from 7:30am to 8:50am with breakfast, while Night Owls runs from 3:20pm to 5:30pm with a snack tea. Families can apply for wraparound care alongside their nursery application. Eligible parents can use a 30-hour code towards costs; contact the school for current charges.
Nursery enquiries and applications go through the school office. Prospective families can arrange an autumn tour through the office at office@eldwick.bradford.sch.uk. Uniform includes a white polo shirt, a school jumper or cardigan bearing the logo, and grey clothing options. A pre-loved uniform rail stands in the North Playground, opposite nursery. Notify the office if somebody different will collect your child.
