At a Glance

Shared stories and learning to play together give Bedford Drive’s early years provision its clearest character. The nursery is known as Foundation 1 and forms part of Bedford Drive Primary School in Rock Ferry. Children can join in the term following their third birthday.

Ofsted graded early years provision Good at the school’s inspection on 15 and 16 November 2022. That judgement covers the school’s early years provision rather than a separately inspected nursery.

The Nursery Day

Books provide a concrete picture of learning here. In November 2022, children in the early years enjoyed books and stories shared by their teachers. For a parent choosing a first learning setting, that puts listening and enjoyment of stories alongside the social experience of being with other children.

The early years foundation stage also gave children opportunities to develop independence and confidence, with adults helping them become more self-reliant learners. Children played together and collaborated in learning. These are useful foundations for participating in a group: learning involves other children as well as an adult.

Foundation 1 has its own curriculum overview. This distinguishes the nursery’s learning programme within the school’s year-group information and gives parents a specific starting point for understanding their child’s stage.

Care and Support

Support for additional needs sits within the school’s SEND arrangements. Teaching assistants contribute to learning and personal development, while individual help, interventions and work in small groups are offered where needed. The school works with parents, external agencies and Wirral Local Authority. For families considering nursery, these are school-level arrangements to discuss in relation to their child’s needs.

Calm Corners are provided across classrooms and the school. Comfortable seating, cuddly toys and books give children somewhere to pause and reflect on their feelings. Family support also includes advice and help finding specialist agencies, extending the conversation beyond classroom learning.

The school menu includes daily jacket potatoes, a deli option and fresh fruit. These describe the school’s meal choices rather than establishing a nursery lunch booking arrangement.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place or confer priority under the admission criteria listed by the school. Those criteria concern care status, siblings, medical circumstances, catchment and distance. Familiarity with the school therefore needs to be kept separate from the allocation of a place.

Families must make a separate Reception application through Wirral Council’s coordinated primary admissions scheme. The admissions portal opens in September before the year of entry and closes in early January. Keep that application in your calendar while your child attends nursery; the Foundation 1 application does not replace it.

Practical Information

Foundation 1 applications are handled directly by the school. Collect an application form from the office, which is also the enquiry route: telephone 0151 645 1561 or email schooloffice@bedforddrive.wirral.sch.uk.

Communication with parents is primarily electronic, so keep the office informed when your email address or telephone contact changes. This helps school messages reach the right person. For concerns about additional needs, the office provides access to the SEND coordinator; welfare concerns can be raised with the safeguarding team.

FAQs

No. Nursery attendance is not a priority criterion in the arrangements listed by the school and does not guarantee a Reception place.
