Songs, percussion and stories give Devonshire Park’s nursery its character: early learning here includes listening, making sounds and finding words to express ideas. Foundation Stage 1 is the school’s nursery provision on Temple Road in Birkenhead. Children can start in the term following their third birthday, subject to places being available.
Capacity depends on the attendance pattern: 52 part-time places or 26 full-time places. The Foundation Stage occupies a building shared with younger primary classes and learning resource provision. Two ramps provide access to that building, a practical detail for families considering mobility needs.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) follows the Early Years 2021 framework. For parents, the concrete detail is in the activities: Foundation Stage children use percussion outside and indoors, learn instrument names and experiment with changing sounds. Loud and quiet, slow and fast become ideas children can explore through doing. Singing and responding to music with movement add language and physical expression to the day.
Drawing Club is the school’s named approach to imagination, vocabulary and early writing. Picture books, animations and tales provide starting points, with shared class time followed by smaller groups developing their ideas. Drawing gives children another way to express a story while practising the small hand movements involved in writing.
Children needing additional help come within the school’s SEND policy. Assessment on entry provides a starting point; teachers keep parents involved, and support plans are reviewed each term. The SENDCo coordinates additional assessment and support. Teaching assistants support all classes, with individual help, small groups or interventions used where needed. This gives families a defined process for discussing a child’s needs and reviewing the response.
Medical care has a separate planning route: children with serious medical conditions have an Individual Health Care Plan developed with parents and health professionals. For children attending full time, parents provide a packed lunch, with lunch scheduled from 11:30 to noon.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route, administered by Wirral Local Education Authority. Treat the nursery decision and the Reception application as separate commitments.
Morning sessions run from 08:40 to 11:40; afternoons run from 12:00 to 15:00. Provision operates during term time across 38 weeks. Families can access 15 funded hours from the term after a child turns three, while the 30-hour pattern is for eligible families.
Nursery applications go directly to the school using a form from the office. Contact the office on 0151 608 9243 or email schooloffice@devonshirepark.wirral.sch.uk for nursery enquiries.
