Nursery at Acocks Green Primary School

Concentration is a striking feature of nursery life here. In July 2024, children sustained attention unusually well for their age, giving the learning activities a purposeful feel. Acocks Green Primary School’s nursery sits within its primary provision on Westley Road in Birmingham; the school’s starting age is three.
Ofsted graded the school’s early years provision Outstanding following its inspection on 16 and 17 July 2024. That judgement covers early years within the school, rather than a separately inspected nursery.
Language and number give the early learning curriculum its clearest character. In July 2024, carefully selected learning materials helped children understand patterns in numbers, while an environment filled with language supported their early reading development. The emphasis is on understanding. Carefully chosen resources support that understanding of number patterns.
Activities are planned to engage children and extend what they understand. Across early years, staff adjusted their planning to children’s starting points, including those beginning with fewer established skills, and to the needs of children learning English as an additional language. Children progressed quickly in July 2024. This makes the early years approach relevant for families whose children are developing English alongside another language: their language needs are considered within the learning programme.
Class Dojo connects home and school. Parents receive access to a closed communication system through which staff share photographs, videos and school updates, giving families another way to keep in touch with school life. To arrange a conversation with staff, parents can telephone, email, text or send a Class Dojo message. They can also speak with their child’s teacher in the playground. These routes make it possible to raise a question directly as well as receive general news.
At school level, the support structure includes an assistant headteacher responsible for SEND. Six designated safeguarding leads can be contacted about concerns, including through the school office or Class Dojo. Concerns are handled confidentially, with information shared with professionals needed to respond. For families, there is a clear route for raising a worry about a child, rather than relying solely on routine updates.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process and meet the applicable deadline.
For the September 2026 intake, nursery attendance conferred no priority. Children whose EHCP named the academy had overall admission priority. The oversubscription criteria then prioritised children who were looked after or previously looked after, qualifying siblings and proximity to the academy. The sibling criterion excluded siblings attending Nursery. Choosing this nursery should therefore be a decision about the early years experience, with the later school application treated separately.
