Two classrooms, outdoor spaces and access to the school’s field give Albert Bradbeer’s nursery a day that extends beyond the classroom. Play is the organising principle: resources and activities change each week around children’s interests and needs, with early reading, writing and maths woven into their explorations.
This is the nursery within Albert Bradbeer Primary Academy on Turves Green in Birmingham. Children join in September after their third birthday. In January 2025, Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Good; that judgement covers early years within the school, rather than a separately inspected nursery.
Learning through play has a clear purpose here. Activities build social confidence and communication alongside literacy and number skills, so children practise interacting with others as well as developing the foundations for classroom learning. The early years curriculum places an emphasis on language: in January 2025, it was designed to address communication gaps children brought with them when starting school.
Seasonal topics give those activities a changing focus. The nursery’s 2024-25 programme included Marvellous Me!, followed later by Nursery Rhymes / Traditional Tales and Let’s Grow. These themes provided starting points for learning about themselves, stories and growth, while weekly changes to provision responded to the children themselves.
Across EYFS, children take part daily in the RWI phonics programme, with groups organised by ability. Picture prompts support learning letter sounds, and Fred Talk introduces blending sounds into words. Alongside classroom activities, nursery children use outdoor spaces, school play equipment and field areas. There is room for movement as well as focused learning.
Settling starts with introductory sessions during Transition Week for children allocated a nursery place. They spend time in their classroom, meet staff and get to know other children. That gives the start of nursery some familiar faces and surroundings.
Pastoral support sits within the wider academy team. Class teachers, teaching assistants and the Pastoral Manager share responsibility for pupils’ care. The Pastoral Manager works with parents and guardians on family support, with links to Health Visitors, Children’s Services and Forward Thinking. Families can raise concerns through that school support structure.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must apply separately through Birmingham Schools admissions or the local authority preference form, meeting the normal Reception application deadline. Treat that application as a separate step in your planning.
Preparation for the move is a different matter. Nursery staff work closely with Reception, especially during the summer term, helping children prepare for the change. Introductory sessions during Transition Week are also provided for children who have been allocated a place. Familiarity supports settling; it does not secure admission.
The nursery runs mornings from Monday to Friday, 8.45am to noon, and is described as a 15-hour weekly provision. A noon finish matters for families arranging the rest of the day’s care.
Applications use the academy’s nursery application form, with places offered in May for a September start. General enquiries go to enquiry@abp.greenheartlearning.org or 0121 464 2356. The academy’s address is Turves Green, Birmingham, B31 4RD.
