Little Wandle phonics starts in nursery here, giving Aston Tower’s youngest learners an early introduction to the reading programme used across the school. This is the nursery provision within Aston Tower Community Primary School on Upper Sutton Street, Aston, Birmingham. A nursery teacher forms part of the staff team. The school has spacious grounds, although that is a feature of the wider school site.
Early reading has a named approach: Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised. Nursery children begin phonics through this programme, building knowledge of the links between letters and sounds. The sequence continues through school, so these first steps belong to a longer progression in reading and spelling. Parents can also use Little Wandle’s online support for phonics practice at home.
There are occasions beyond the ordinary learning day. The nursery’s Christmas concert was scheduled for 10 December 2025, followed by Nursery Sports Day on 24 June 2026 and a Nursery Trip on 14 July 2026. These were nursery-specific events, giving performance, sport and an outing their own place in the calendar.
Support for additional needs follows the school’s Assess, Plan, Do and Review cycle. The SENCo and class teacher agree interventions, with parents involved in decisions. Individual Target Plans and Pupil Profiles guide support; formal reviews take place termly. This gives families a recurring opportunity to discuss targets and progress.
For children with an EHCP, a SEND Support Provision Plan or a plan pending, parents are invited to discuss provision before their child starts. The school’s SEND induction arrangements can include a phased or amended day. That allows the starting pattern to take account of individual needs.
Nursery children can have school meals. Parents choosing a school meal must complete the diet request form. Breakfast Club also includes food, with yoghurt, fruit, cereal and toast among the choices, alongside board games and other activities.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Under the proposed 2027–2028 admission arrangements, nursery attendance is not an oversubscription priority. Families must make a separate application through their home local authority by 15 January of the relevant year. For September 2027 entry, the deadline is 15 January 2027. Birmingham residents apply through Birmingham City Council’s school admissions service.
Under those proposed arrangements, sibling priority also excludes a brother or sister who attends only the nursery unit. Treat the nursery decision and the Reception application as separate tasks: attendance does not reserve the next place.
Breakfast Club provides charged care for nursery children, with options running from 7.45am to 8.35am or from 8.00am to 8.35am. Complete its application form by the day before the intended start. Ask the school for current breakfast and meal charges.
