Nursery at Barr View Primary & Nursery Academy

Three-hour sessions and two longer-day patterns give Barr View’s nursery a practical point of difference: families can choose between a morning, an afternoon and provision extending into mid-afternoon. The nursery forms part of the state primary academy on Aldridge Road in Great Barr, Birmingham, where the school’s age range begins at three.
This is a nursery within a school community. Its learning connects with the curriculum that follows, but choosing it and securing a Reception place are separate decisions.
Morning children attend from 08:50 to 11:50; the afternoon session runs from 12:30 to 15:30. Full Time Nursery lasts from 08:50 to 15:30, while the distinct 30 Hour Nursery pattern ends at 15:00 after the same start. That difference matters when arranging collection: the two longer options have different finishing times.
Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) learning includes Understanding the World. In the school’s early-years geography and history approach, this means building children’s understanding of the world around them and laying foundations for later learning about places and the past. The emphasis is on beginnings rather than older pupils’ subject work.
In March 2023, nursery staff helped children establish routines promptly and supported their behaviour, leaving learning with few disruptions. The curriculum also connected learning from the Nursery Year onwards. For a young child, those familiar routines provide a framework for taking part in the session.
Seesaw extends the connection with home. Parents can access their child’s journal to see educational tasks and linked learning resources, giving them a concrete way to follow home learning.
Lunch can be chosen on the day: children tell their teacher at registration when they want a school dinner. Nursery meals carry a charge, and payments go through Parent Pay rather than cash. Families should obtain current charges from the school. The school also invites families experiencing financial hardship to speak with the office about help with meals.
SEND support uses the school’s class teachers and Special Educational Needs Leader. Parents are informed when a child joins the SEND register and can discuss provision with staff. Depending on the support needed, an Individual Education Plan may set individual targets; these plans have three reviews a year, with parents invited to participate. Specialist involvement can include Speech and Language Therapists and the Communication and Autism Team.
Identifying additional needs. In March 2023, the school-wide concern was that some children’s needs were identified too slowly, delaying support. Families whose child needs extra help should keep this distinction between planned provision and timely identification in mind.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a place in Barr View’s Reception. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route and meet its deadline. Birmingham City Council provides the school admissions route. Treat the nursery choice as a decision about the nursery day, rather than a promise of a later place.
