Learning to talk, make friends and feel comfortable in a classroom gives Birchfield’s nursery its clearest character. This is the nursery provision within Birchfield Primary School on Trinity Road in Aston, Birmingham. Ofsted rated the school’s early years provision Good at its September 2022 inspection; that judgement covers early years within the school rather than a separately inspected nursery.
Conversation, movement and learning to get along with other children were priorities in early years in September 2022. These are practical foundations: children develop the language to join in, the confidence to explore and the social skills to play alongside others. Those starting points were prioritised within the school’s early years foundation stage at the September 2022 inspection.
In the opening weeks, staff concentrated on familiar routines and helping children understand expectations. Activities gave children opportunities to play, explore and build friendships safely. For a child beginning group learning, knowing what happens next matters as much as the activity itself.
Nursery events add some specific colour. The summer 2026 programme included a trip planned for Ash End Farm in June and a nursery sports day in July. These were distinct opportunities for experiences beyond ordinary classroom activity, rather than evidence of a weekly routine.
Relationships were a strength of early years in September 2022. Staff gave children close attention and established reassuring connections from the start, helping them become comfortable quickly. Settling was supported by both the adults and the atmosphere around them.
For additional needs, Birchfield’s school support includes the Wellcomm language programme and work on fine and gross motor skills. Support can take place individually or in a small group, depending on the child’s needs. Parents discuss concerns with the class teacher, with the Inclusion Team helping to plan adjustments and additional support.
The school’s arrangements include termly SEND reviews and regular checks on intervention programmes. That gives families a way to discuss both the support being provided and whether it needs to change. Across the school buildings, level access to the main building and adapted toilets are concrete accessibility features.
Parent involvement also has nursery-specific examples: the summer 2026 programme scheduled a June workshop and a July exhibition for nursery families. These give parents opportunities to engage with their child’s learning beyond individual conversations.
Attending Birchfield’s nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. For 2027/2028, nursery attendance confers no admissions priority, and families must make a separate Reception application through their home local authority in the normal admissions round. The local authority sends the offer directly.
Transition support is a separate matter. For children with SEND, enhanced arrangements may include extra meetings with the next teacher, additional classroom visits or photographs assembled into a transition booklet. These can help make a new classroom more familiar; they do not change how places are allocated.
Nursery applications for September entry have a dedicated application route. Admissions enquiries go to 0121 464 5661, and school tours can be arranged by appointment. Families can also contact enquiry@birchfld.bham.sch.uk.
The Trust does not charge for education during school hours, subject to limited exceptions. Materials that parents want their child to keep may carry a charge. Ask the school for current charges before agreeing to purchases.
The September 2022 judgement of Good applies to the school’s early years provision. It is not a separate nursery inspection outcome.
In September 2022, priorities included communication, physical development and learning to manage feelings and relationships, with play and exploration supporting these foundations.
