Stories, rhymes and conversation give Brookfields nursery its character. This is a morning-only provision within Brookfields Primary School in Hockley, Birmingham, with books travelling home each day so families can join in the learning.
For the September 2026 intake, nursery places were offered to children born between 1 September 2022 and 31 August 2023. Ofsted rated the school's early years provision Good at its inspection on 13 and 14 March 2023. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating.
Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised provides the nursery's Foundations for Phonics approach. Children practise oral blending daily, alongside language activities using stories and rhymes. The emphasis is on listening and spoken language: working with sounds before putting them together in reading.
Brown Bear, Brown Bear and Goldilocks are named story-time choices. Reading continues at home through pleasure books, exchanged on Mondays and Thursdays. Families are asked to share each book at least three times during the week, discuss its pictures and ask about characters and events. This gives parents a concrete way to extend the nursery's language work.
In March 2023, adults helped early-years children broaden their vocabulary and encouraged complete sentences, building confidence in discussing their learning. Children also followed their teachers' routines. Outdoor learning. At that time, the early-years outdoor space needed better organisation and equipment to support learning. Its development was an improvement priority, a material consideration for families who value learning outdoors.
Children settled promptly into early years in March 2023. For the morning session, fruit and milk are provided daily, with no lunch served. A named water bottle should come in each day, making drinking water part of the practical preparation for nursery.
Brookfields aims to identify individual needs early and arrange support, including for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND). Parents can contact the SEND coordinator through the main office. The school's Early Help process offers voluntary family support: staff discuss concerns, agree a plan with parents and, with consent, involve other services. Families remain involved in decisions.
Health changes should be reported to school. Medication requires prior agreement before staff can administer it, so arrangements need to be settled through the office. Food brought into school must exclude nuts because of children's allergies.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Parents must make a separate application to Birmingham City Council online, and nursery attendance does not give automatic priority.
For entry in September 2026, the application deadline was 15 January 2026. That deadline belongs to a past admissions cycle. Families should treat the Reception application as a separate task from securing nursery attendance.
