Nursery at City Road Primary School

Early language, number knowledge and learning to respect others give City Road’s nursery its clearest character. This is nursery provision within City Road Primary School in Rotton Park, Birmingham, with an early years leadership role in the school’s senior team. The nursery was part-time at the January 2023 inspection.
Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Good following its inspection on 24 and 25 January 2023. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating.
Language and numbers have a visible place in learning. In January 2023, early years children used displays to develop their knowledge of both, giving them something concrete to refer to as they learned. The emphasis was on foundations that would support subsequent learning.
Respect for other people was another explicit part of early years teaching at that time. Alongside learning words and numbers, children learned why treating others respectfully matters. For parents, these are two distinct parts of the nursery experience: developing early knowledge and beginning to understand how to live and learn alongside other children.
Support for special educational needs and disabilities follows the school’s Assess – Plan – Do – Review cycle. Staff identify a child’s needs, agree individual targets, put support into practice and review progress. This gives families a sequence of decisions to contribute to, rather than a single conversation about a concern.
Parents can meet teaching and support staff, discuss their child’s needs with the SEND coordinator and contribute to planning. Parent workshops bring education, health and support professionals into those conversations. The school also works with outside specialists who can assess needs, suggest strategies and, where appropriate, provide targeted interventions.
For an initial SEND discussion, families can contact the office to arrange a telephone conversation or a meeting in person. Wider family support includes applications for Greggs Foundation hardship funding made by the school on a family’s behalf. This is a practical support route alongside discussions about a child’s learning.
Attending City Road’s nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process, using Birmingham City Council’s admissions route. Treat that application as a separate step in your plans, even if your child already attends the nursery.
The school’s contact address is Cavendish Road, Rotton Park, Birmingham B16 0HL. Enquiries can go through the office on 0121 464 3348 or through the contact form. Visits can be arranged by contacting the office, giving families a direct way to discuss joining.
Breakfast club eligibility. The school’s breakfast club is for children from Reception to Year 6. It therefore does not provide a nursery breakfast-club option. Families planning nursery care should keep that age restriction in mind when organising their mornings.
No. Nursery attendance does not guarantee a place, and families must apply separately for Reception through Birmingham City Council’s admissions route.
The school’s early years provision was judged Good at the inspection on 24 and 25 January 2023. This was a school early years judgement, not a separate nursery rating.
Contact the school office to arrange a telephone conversation or an in-person meeting with the SEND coordinator. Support uses the Assess – Plan – Do – Review cycle, with parents involved in planning.
The breakfast club is for children from Reception to Year 6, so nursery children are outside its stated age group.
