Nursery at Clifton Primary School

Rhymes, songs and stories give Clifton’s early years its character: children hear new words and practise putting sentences together, with adults making conversation part of learning. This is the nursery provision within Clifton Primary School in Balsall Heath, Birmingham. Children can start in the term after their third birthday.
The practical shape is straightforward: morning and afternoon sessions run Monday to Friday. Both last three hours, giving families a clearly defined part of the day to plan around. Free nursery places are advertised, while nursery applications go directly to the school.
Language takes a prominent place in the early years foundation stage (EYFS). At the April 2025 inspection, staff skilfully demonstrated how sentences work and introduced vocabulary through regular conversations with children. Songs, storytelling and rhymes supplied further opportunities to enjoy language. For parents, that means spoken communication is part of the learning itself, rather than simply instructions children receive.
Classroom habits matter too. In April 2025, early years children picked up classroom expectations quickly and kept their concentration during activities. These findings give a concrete picture of children learning how to take part in a group and stay with something that interests them.
Health and emotional learning begin in Nursery. Teaching covers friendships, handling feelings and responding to loss, alongside physical health. These topics give children language for experiences that can otherwise be difficult to explain. Nursery online safety learning also includes recognising personal information and understanding that children can refuse something that makes them uncomfortable.
For children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), support sits within the school’s wider arrangements. The team includes two SENCOs and two deputy SENCOs, alongside a strategic SEND lead. Parents can raise developmental concerns with their child’s teacher or contact the SEND team directly.
Support follows an assess, plan, do and review cycle, with parents involved in agreeing goals and considering progress. Teaching assistants have training in approaches including Makaton, Soundswell and Black Sheep Language. These are school support resources, with provision matched to the individual child rather than a promise that every nursery child receives a particular intervention.
Physical access includes level routes across the site and wheelchair access to all buildings. Each building also has a personal care room with a shower and adjustable changing equipment. For families whose child needs help with mobility or personal care, these are concrete facilities relevant to participation in school life.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through Birmingham City Council, either online or using the local authority preference form. The council sets the return deadline; the school describes this as normally in December. Check the council’s deadline for the relevant entry year before submitting an application.
Keep this application separate from the nursery arrangement. A child already attending Clifton’s nursery still needs the Reception application completed through that route.
Nursery AM runs from 8.25am to 11.25am; Nursery PM runs from 12.35pm to 3.35pm, Monday to Friday. Morning collection gates open from 11.25am to 11.35am, and afternoon collection gates open from 3.35pm to 3.45pm. Those short collection windows matter when coordinating work or another child’s pickup.
Application forms are obtainable from the school office. Applications can be made after a child’s birth, and places are not allocated simply by application order. Proof of the child’s identity, birth date and home address is required.
