Nursery at Colebourne Primary School
Last reviewed: October 2026 · Inspection data and key information above update regularly, however, this review below is refreshed bi-annually and may not reflect recent changes. Contact the nursery directly to confirm current arrangements. If you spot anything outdated or inaccurate, please let us know.
A nursery room of its own, an outdoor play area and shared spaces for books and quieter moments give Colebourne’s youngest children a distinct base within the school. The nursery occupies the Early Years block beside the Reception classrooms at Colebourne Primary School in Hodge Hill, Birmingham. It takes children aged three who reach four during the admission year, between September and August.
This is school nursery provision with its own facilities: children have dedicated toilets as well as their nursery room and play area. Shared resources add something different to that base, including a sensory space and a literacy zone with a library room.
Play and adult-guided learning sit alongside each other. In October 2024, Ofsted found that early mathematics developed through both activities children could access during play and guided sessions. Children used numbers confidently while playing and discussed position and size. That gives parents a concrete picture of early years foundation stage learning here: mathematical ideas become part of what children do and talk about.
The physical layout supports several kinds of activity. Books have a place in the shared literacy zone and library room; a kitchen provides somewhere to bake cakes and biscuits. Alongside these shared facilities, the nursery’s own outdoor area gives it a separate space for play outside.
Adult interaction was a strength of the early years provision at the October 2024 inspection, which also praised learning opportunities indoors and outdoors. These findings concern the early years provision across the school. They give useful context for the nursery day, rather than a separate nursery grade.
The staffing structure includes a nursery teacher and a nursery teaching assistant. A shared sensory and well-being space provides a physical setting for quieter moments alongside the main nursery room.
Support for additional needs begins in the early years. In October 2024, needs were identified effectively and support was reviewed through personalised plans and targets. There was a communication concern, however: some parents did not clearly understand the help their child received. For families needing SEND support, understanding the plan and its reviews matters as much as knowing that support is in place.
School meals can be chosen with the combined morning-and-afternoon provision, with an additional charge where meals are required. Families can also contact the school’s family support team for help with medical, emotional or social needs, disabilities and difficulties at home. The team can direct families towards Hodge Hill’s Family Hubs.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place, and Colebourne’s admissions information explicitly rules out automatic priority. Families must make a separate application to the local authority where they live, usually Birmingham. The nursery application does not replace it.
For the September 2026 Reception intake, the admissions page described the deadline as usually mid-January and directed families to Birmingham City Council for exact details. That intake is now past. The shared library and sensory spaces connect the nursery physically with Reception, but shared facilities do not confer an admissions advantage.
Morning sessions run from 8:30am to 11:30am, Monday to Friday. The afternoon pattern runs Monday to Thursday, finishing at 3:15pm, with a Friday morning session from 8:30am to 11:30am instead. The 30-hour pattern runs 8:30am to 3:15pm Monday to Thursday and 8:30am to 11:30am on Friday. Plan around that shorter Friday.
The morning and afternoon patterns use the 15-hour funded entitlement. Funding for the 30-hour option depends on eligibility; families who do not qualify can pay for the additional hours. Further top-up hours can also be requested. Contact the school for current charges, including meals where required.
Nursery applications use an online form. Admissions enquiries can go to admissions@colebourne.bham.sch.uk, or families can ring 0121 675 8500, option 1.
Children are three when they join and turn four between September of the admission year and the following August.
No. Attendance does not guarantee a place or give automatic priority. A separate application must be made through the local authority where the family lives.
All three nursery attendance patterns include a Friday morning session from 8:30am to 11:30am. The afternoon pattern switches to the morning on Fridays.
The morning and afternoon patterns use 15 funded hours. The 30-hour pattern can be funded for eligible families, with paid top-up hours for those who do not qualify for the full entitlement. Meals carry an additional charge where required.
It has a dedicated nursery outdoor play area. The Early Years block also includes a shared sensory and well-being space and a literacy zone with a library room.
