Nursery at Coleshill Heath School

Messy exploration, repeated stories and an outdoor classroom give Coleshill Heath’s nursery its character. Children can join the younger provision from the term after their second birthday, alongside nursery provision for three- and four-year-olds. This is the school’s own early years provision on Lime Grove in Chelmsley Wood.
The emphasis changes with age: younger children explore sensations, relationships and language, while the older nursery children add story-making, counting and activities that practise hand control. Play connects the two. We hold no published inspection grade for this nursery.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) brings together communication, movement and emotional development with early reading and writing, mathematics, understanding the world and creative expression. Here, children’s interests influence the activities adults plan. Loose parts and resources with several possible uses leave room for children to test their own ideas, with adults joining their play and asking questions that extend their thinking.
For two-year-olds, conversation, rhymes and songs provide opportunities to practise new words. Familiar books return repeatedly, giving children time to understand their stories, while role-play draws on experiences they recognise. Small-group Bucket Time focuses on attention and listening. Learning also includes getting used to routines, recognising feelings and making relationships.
An outdoor classroom is used daily by the younger children for movement, strength and coordination. Older nursery children explore outdoors and through forest school, bringing sensory investigation into their learning about the world. Across early years, indoor and outdoor activities continue in different weather, and practical experiences include cooking and messy play.
Talk for Writing gives the older children a way into storytelling: they act out familiar tales, remember them and then change them into stories of their own. Funky fingers and mark-making activities practise the small movements needed for drawing and writing. Number songs, building materials and objects make counting and shape tangible. Children can handle an idea before trying to explain it.
Adults play alongside children rather than leaving exploration entirely to them. The nursery also helps younger children understand emotions and form relationships, while older children learn to recognise that other people may think differently. These activities connect social learning with everyday play.
Speech and language support has an explicit early years link within the school’s SEND team. Coleshill Heath works with the Community Speech And Language Therapy team, whose therapists assess communication needs and difficulties involving eating or drinking with parents and carers. Parents can make a referral themselves; a referral from someone else requires parental consent. That gives families a direct role in seeking support.
Across the school, individual learning or behaviour support is shaped around children’s needs, with parents taking part in regular discussions. This provides a route for families to contribute to decisions about their child’s support.
Attending the nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal school admissions route and meet the relevant deadline. Coleshill Heath directs school admissions enquiries to Solihull Council, while nursery applications go directly to the school. Treat these as separate decisions.
Preparation for school is part of the older nursery’s aim, approached through exploration and play. Storytelling, counting, hand control and learning to respect other viewpoints are part of that preparation. They are learning experiences, not an entitlement to a Reception place.
Nursery applications are handled by Coleshill Heath itself. Completed application forms can be returned to office@chs.solihull.sch.uk, and families can obtain a paper form from the school office. There are separate forms for the younger and older nursery age groups.
