Conversation, cooperative play and small responsibilities give Gossey Lane’s early years provision its character. Adults introduce vocabulary through everyday exchanges, while children practise independence through jobs such as helping oversee snacks. These are practical foundations for learning: speaking, getting along with others and doing things for yourself.
Gossey Lane Academy has nursery provision and admits children from age three. It is part of a primary school in Kitts Green, Birmingham. Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Good at the inspection on 24 and 25 June 2025. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating.
In the school’s early years provision, the June 2025 inspection found that adults developed children’s language through conversation and children played together cooperatively. Small classroom responsibilities, including snack and lunch monitor roles, helped build confidence and independence. Everyday exchanges and tasks gave children opportunities to practise these skills.
Children in early years settled into routines quickly and formed positive relationships with each other in June 2025. They also managed their emotions effectively. For families, these findings matter alongside learning: joining in and coping with feelings are part of becoming comfortable at school.
Across Gossey Lane, the Gossey Way uses three expectations: being ready, showing respect and staying safe. Staff have training in calming difficult situations, and the school reports behaviour to parents regularly. Its approach allows for additional needs; an Individual One Page Profile supports children whose special educational needs or disabilities lead to challenging behaviour. This is a school-wide arrangement, rather than a description of nursery staffing.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route and meet the normal deadline. Treat choosing nursery and securing a school place as separate decisions.
