A Nursery Lead Teacher and a Family Group Leader give Heathfield’s nursery a distinct team within the primary school. For parents, those roles provide a starting point for conversations about their child’s learning and adjustment to school life.
Heathfield Primary School is on Heathfield Road in Birmingham. The school aims to recognise additional needs early and help children become independent learners. That makes discussing a child’s communication, development and care needs before they start a useful part of choosing this nursery.
Learning support can take different forms here. Across Heathfield, classroom teaching is adapted to individual needs, with additional help sometimes provided individually or in small groups. This means a child’s support can be planned around the difficulties they experience, rather than assuming every child needs the same intervention.
Wellcomm language programme, Attention Bucket and Colourful Semantics are among the school’s named interventions. These are school support options, rather than a timetable of activities for every nursery child. Teachers, inclusion staff and support staff can deliver additional intervention alongside classroom learning. Parents are informed when their child receives individual or small-group support outside the classroom, and changes to that support are discussed with them.
Settling can be adjusted to the child. For children with SEND, an induction meeting brings parents and relevant professionals together to share information with staff. A phased or altered day may be offered at the beginning, allowing the starting arrangement to take account of individual needs.
The Lead Practitioner for Inclusion & SEND coordinates additional provision. Under the trust’s support arrangements, one-page profiles record needs and strategies, while termly reviews give parents an opportunity to discuss progress. This creates a practical link between support in class and conversations at home.
Physical access includes ramps and adapted toilets across the school. A care room also has a changing bed with adjustable height. Children with complex medical needs can have an individual healthcare plan developed with their family, the school nurse and other professionals.
For children taking school meals, the menu includes daily fruit, a salad bar and yoghurt. Meal charges apply to children without free-meal entitlement unless the trust agrees otherwise or the school runs a free-meal initiative; payment is made in advance through Parent Pay.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place or confer priority under the 2027/2028 admission arrangements. Families must make a separate application through their home local authority’s normal application process and meet the deadline for their entry year. The local authority sends the offer directly to the family.
Transition support is a separate matter. Children moving between classes have information about their preferences and helpful strategies passed to the next teacher through a One Page Profile. Nursery children with complex additional needs also take home a transition book for the summer, giving families something concrete to work through together.
Nursery applications for September entry have a dedicated application route. For admissions enquiries, telephone 0121 464 6474 or email enquiry@heathfld.bham.sch.uk. School tours can be arranged by appointment, providing an opportunity to meet the setting before applying.
The trust does not seek donations, deposits or voluntary financial contributions as part of admission. Keep the nursery application and the later Reception application as separate tasks when planning your child’s next steps.
