An early start within a primary school: nursery provision is part of Jervoise School in Weoley Castle, Birmingham, where the school’s age range begins at three. The setting belongs to drb Ignite Multi Academy Trust. Its stated ambition is for children’s educational achievement to be shaped by opportunity rather than their circumstances or background.
Language is a clear priority in the school’s curriculum, which extends from the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). Jervoise aims to develop children’s communication and vocabulary through learning that builds progressively. For parents, the emphasis is on how children learn to express themselves as well as what they learn.
Individual needs also inform planning. Across the school, teaching is adapted to help children participate alongside their peers, with assessment used to identify where additional support may be needed. That makes a child’s interests, strengths and barriers to learning relevant to the support discussed with families.
Support has a defined route. Parents can raise concerns with the class teacher or the special educational needs and disabilities coordinator (SENDCo). The school works with families to understand a child’s difficulties and agree additional help.
Across Jervoise, support follows an assess, plan, do and review cycle: staff consider needs, decide on provision, put it into practice and check progress. Additional help can include WellComm for speech and language, while more targeted support may involve Sensory Circuits or speech and language interventions. These are school support options, with provision chosen according to individual needs.
Children on the SEND register have their support reviewed three times a year with parents involved. Families receive a copy of an active Individual Education Plan, helping them understand the targets and provision being used. Where internal help proves insufficient, an external referral is made with parental agreement.
The school site includes accessible corridors and disabled toilets. Learning spaces are checked for sensory needs, making the physical environment part of the discussion about a child’s access to school life.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place or confer admission priority. Families must make a separate application through the normal local authority process and meet that authority’s timetable. For Birmingham applicants, the route is Birmingham City Council’s Reception application process.
Oversubscription priority goes to looked-after and previously looked-after children, then qualifying siblings, then children living nearest the school. Nursery attendance is not a criterion. Familiarity with Jervoise therefore remains separate from the allocation of a place.
Transition support addresses children’s needs rather than admission entitlement. Staff share relevant information and paperwork so support can continue between settings. Where appropriate, a transition book or social story can include photographs of the new classroom teacher to take home, giving families something concrete to discuss with their child.
