Nursery at Merritts Brook Primary E-ACT Academy

A 26-place, part-time class gives Merritts Brook’s nursery a clear identity within its primary academy in Northfield. Children can join at the admission point after their third birthday, with September, January and April entry points. This is an introduction to school through the academy’s own nursery class, so families need to plan around a part-time arrangement.
The academy occupies the building it moved into on 3 November 2021, on Trescott Road. That move brought a library and an on-site kitchen to the school. These are features of the wider academy setting, rather than a description of the nursery classroom.
Teaching connects directly with early years leadership: the nursery teacher also leads the early years phase. For parents, that combination places responsibility for nursery teaching and leadership of the early years phase with the same member of the team.
An early years teaching assistant also has the Speech and Language Champion role. This gives speech and language a specific place in the staffing structure, a useful point for families thinking about their child’s communication as they begin nursery.
Support for additional needs sits within the academy’s SENCo and Inclusion Team structure. The SENCo joins progress discussions each half term and works with teachers and teaching assistants on targets that can be measured. This creates a regular opportunity to review a child’s progress and adjust support.
Specialist partners include the Communication and Autism Team, an Educational Psychologist and a Speech and Language Therapist. The academy also works with occupational therapy services. For a family whose child needs additional help, these connections provide routes to specialist input alongside classroom staff.
Preparation for starting nursery includes a Learning bear pack, a Nursery Ready Poster and number readiness support, supplied after a family accepts an offered place. These give parents concrete material to use before the start. Food preparation is part of the wider school infrastructure: the kitchen added with the building move enables fresh school meals to be made on site.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place and does not give automatic priority. Families must make a separate school application through Birmingham’s school admissions route. Treat that application as a separate task, even if your child already attends nursery.
For September 2027 entry, the application period begins on 1 October 2026 and closes on 17 January 2027. The practical implication is straightforward: accepting a nursery place does not replace submitting the Reception application by that deadline.
The nursery operates on a part-time basis. To apply, contact the school office and complete the nursery application paperwork. The three entry points allow a start after a child’s third birthday rather than restricting entry to September.
