Play, natural materials and a shared Foundation Stage playground give Paget’s nursery its character. This is early education within Paget Primary School on Paget Road, in Birmingham’s Pype Hayes, with children usually joining in September after their third birthday. Children learn through exploration and play, and the school aims to help them become confident and independent.
A nursery teacher forms part of the school’s staff team. For families choosing a school setting from the start, the nursery combines its own teaching role with access to the school’s wider inclusion and family support structure.
Exploration shapes the learning approach. Paget follows the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), which treats children as individuals who develop at different speeds. In practical terms, children try resources, pursue interests and test ideas through play. The school aims to build communication, confidence and physical development through these experiences. Learning includes persistence: having another go and working out a solution matter alongside the finished activity.
Natural materials provide a concrete starting point for understanding the world. Children investigate them in early years, giving exploration a practical focus. Outside, the Reception Playground serves all Foundation Stage children for learning and play, and the Foundation Stage has a climbing frame. These are useful physical features for a nursery day that includes movement as well as investigation.
Early literacy has a named approach too. Nursery children begin phonics sessions in the summer term, using Read Write Inc. The programme connects letters with sounds and introduces blending, so this element of the day gives children a structured way to begin making sense of written words.
Paget’s early-years approach places importance on relationships with parents and responding to each child’s needs. That makes family involvement part of the intended care model, alongside the school’s aim to help children become more independent.
Support extends beyond the nursery teacher. The school has a SENCo and Inclusion Lead, while its pastoral structure brings together a Pastoral Manager, Family Support Worker and Parental Engagement Lead. Their work includes helping families with challenges that affect school life.
The school’s ASD practitioner also supports mainstream staff with classroom strategies. Named interventions include Attention Autism and Lego Therapy, alongside speech and language work using Makaton. These sit within the wider school support structure; individual provision depends on the child’s needs.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place and gives no automatic priority. Families must make a separate Reception application through Birmingham City Council’s online school admissions route, meeting the deadline for their child’s entry year. Choosing the nursery should therefore be a decision about early education, rather than an assumption that a later place is secured.
The shared Foundation Stage play area offers a practical connection between nursery and Reception children. Familiarity with a school space is separate from admission: it does not replace the application process or determine the allocation of a place.
The nursery’s 15-hour weekly entitlement is arranged across two full days and one morning: Monday and Tuesday are full days, followed by Wednesday morning. This concentrates attendance into the beginning of the week, an important consideration when fitting nursery around work or other childcare.
