Play, books and early language give Severne’s nursery its character. Children learn through practical activity, with topics and stories providing the starting points for their curriculum. This is the nursery within Severne Junior Infant and Nursery School in Acocks Green, Birmingham, rather than a separate childcare setting.
At the November 2022 inspection, Ofsted graded the school’s early years provision Good. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating. The useful detail for parents is the combination of established routines, learning planned around children’s existing skills, and opportunities to practise independently.
Playing and doing shape the learning here. The nursery follows the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), with books and topics organising what children explore. For a parent, the emphasis is on learning through activity: developing language and early number skills, then using those skills in their own work and play.
In November 2022, staff planned activities to reflect children’s starting points. Early language and number development were strengths, and children practised both inside and outside while working independently. This gives the day an important balance: adults plan the learning, while children have opportunities to use it for themselves.
The physical learning environment was arranged and equipped to support that work. Indoor and outdoor learning both formed part of the early years experience, so practice was not confined to the classroom. Clear routines also helped structure the provision. Together, these features give parents a more useful picture of the day than a list of curriculum intentions: planned activity, independent practice and learning across both spaces.
A nursery staff team supports children, with an EYFS phase leader providing the leadership structure. For families, that places nursery within a defined early years team rather than leaving it separate from the school’s organisation.
Communication uses the school’s MyChildAtSchool (MCAS) system from Bromcom. Parents need an email address registered with the school, which then sends an account setup link. Access is through either an app or a web portal, giving families two ways to use the same communication system.
Sensitive information and safeguarding concerns have a separate contact route: pastoral@severne.bham.sch.uk. This gives parents a direct channel for matters that need confidential handling, alongside the general enquiry address.
Attending Severne’s nursery does not guarantee a place in the school’s Reception. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process and meet the applicable deadline. Choosing the nursery and applying for Reception are separate decisions; parents should plan for both.
The school is on Severne Road, Acocks Green, Birmingham, B27 7HR. General enquiries can go to enquiry@severne.bham.sch.uk or be made by calling 0121 706 2743. These are the school’s general contact routes for families considering its nursery.
For ongoing school communication, register a valid email address so the MCAS account invitation can reach you. The school asks parents to check their junk or clutter folder for that setup message. Once registered, families can use the web portal or app.
