At a Glance

Caterpillars becoming butterflies give Springfield’s early years a concrete starting point for discovery: children observe change, learn new words and practise counting. This is the nursery class within Springfield Primary Academy in Moseley, with care and learning forming part of the same early years provision.

Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Good at the inspection on 21 and 22 June 2023. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating. The useful detail is how adults connect children’s interests with language, numbers and learning to get along with others.

The Nursery Day

The nursery timetable starts at 8.45am and ends at 3.10pm, with lunchtime running from 11.30am to 1.00pm. Both collection and drop-off use the Nursery/Reception Gate, giving families a specific entrance for the nursery day.

Within the early years foundation stage (EYFS), the June 2023 findings describe children practising cooperation, handling emotions and developing their language and number skills. Working with another child or a group gives sharing and turn-taking a practical purpose. These are everyday learning tasks, alongside counting and conversation.

The butterfly example shows how those strands can connect. Adults introduced the word chrysalis while children watched the life cycle unfold, bringing precise vocabulary into an experience they could follow. Counting was also practised in different ways. For parents, the emphasis is on learning through concrete experiences rather than treating language and mathematics as isolated tasks.

Care and Support

In June 2023, adults understood the youngest children’s individual needs and planned both their care and their learning accordingly. Support with feelings sat alongside learning to cooperate, giving children practice in managing the social demands of a group.

Staffing includes a nursery teaching role and EYFS teaching assistants. The school also has a special educational needs coordinator, while its Pastoral Team and Health & Learning Mentor lead Early Help. Families can contact that team through the school office, providing a route into support beyond the classroom.

Preparation for starting school includes a Nursery Welcome Video and induction materials such as Getting ready for school and The Road to School. These give families a starting point for preparing together before nursery begins.

Early reading. In June 2023, some staff new to phonics teaching across the school needed a firmer understanding of its approach. Inconsistent teaching meant some children behind in reading caught up more slowly. This is relevant context for families considering the wider early years provision.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process and meet its deadline. Choosing the nursery and applying for Reception are distinct decisions; familiarity with the school should not be treated as an offer of a place.

Practical Information

Enquiries go first to the administrative team through the school office on 0121 464 3618. Springfield Primary Academy is on Springfield Road, Birmingham, B13 9NY.

The school expects children to wear uniform: a green cardigan or sweatshirt, a white polo shirt or shirt, and grey or black bottoms are among the options. Shoes should be smart and black, and clothing should be labelled so lost items can be returned.

Morning childcare. The school’s free breakfast club is restricted to Reception through Year 6, so nursery children are excluded from that arrangement. Families should plan their morning around the nursery’s 8.45am drop-off.
