Nursery at SS Mary & John Catholic Primary School

Early phonics and familiar routines give the nursery at SS Mary & John Catholic Primary School its clearest educational character. This is the school's own nursery in Erdington, Birmingham, within a Catholic primary setting. Its team includes a nursery teacher and a nursery teaching assistant, placing teaching and classroom support together.
Ofsted judged the school's early years provision Good at the inspection on 7 and 8 March 2023. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating.
Learning sounds starts early. In March 2023, children in early years began phonics when they started school, and responded positively to the routines organising their day. For parents, those findings give a concrete picture of early reading alongside predictable expectations.
The physical setting is changing. During the September 2026 to February 2028 rebuild period, children from the infant site move to the junior site, where temporary buildings are in use. Outdoor space and shared indoor space are limited. This is a material consideration for families who place particular weight on room to play and move around.
Communication support includes visual timetables in each classroom and boards showing what happens now and next. These give children a visible sequence for activities. Early years teaching staff have also received Wellcomm training, while speech and language support includes help for staff running language groups in early years.
Parents have routes to raise concerns between scheduled meetings. A senior leader is available each day before and after school without an appointment, although busy periods can mean a wait. Class teachers make time to speak with parents within 24 hours, with contact possible by telephone, email or at the day's end.
For children needing additional support, the SENDCo coordinates provision with classroom staff and outside agencies. Individual Target Plans identify next steps, with assessments and plans updated each half term and parents consulted once per term. This gives families recurring opportunities to discuss how support is working.
Settling support for children with SEND can include visits before starting, contact with their previous setting and a transition book containing photographs of classroom and school spaces. Familiarity is built before the first full experience of the new setting. Safeguarding concerns can be raised through the school office or by emailing dsl@stmryjon.net.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application, and attendance is not a Reception priority criterion for September 2027 entry.
Apply through the local authority where you live, naming the school, by 15 January 2027 for September 2027 entry. A Supplementary Information Form must also reach the school by that date. Treat this as a separate task from joining nursery.
For children with SEND, moving year groups includes meeting the new teacher during Transition Afternoon and sharing One Page Profiles. These arrangements support familiarity; they do not confer an admissions advantage.
Contact the school office on 0121 382 3522 or email enquiry@stmryjon.net for nursery enquiries. The school is on Beaufort Road, Erdington, Birmingham, B23 7NB.
Rebuild access. During the rebuild, the school plans classroom allocation around children's physical access needs, using rooms at floor level or accessible by ramp. Families whose child needs step-free access should discuss those needs with the SENDCo when planning the start.
No. Reception requires a separate application, and nursery attendance is not a priority criterion for September 2027 entry.
