Nursery at St Brigid's Catholic Primary School

Last reviewed: October 2026 · Inspection data and key information above update regularly, however, this review below is refreshed bi-annually and may not reflect recent changes. Contact the nursery directly to confirm current arrangements. If you spot anything outdated or inaccurate, please let us know.

At a Glance

Five mornings or five afternoons give St Brigid’s Nursery its defining rhythm: children attend each day, rather than choosing a few days a week. This is nursery provision attached to St Brigid’s Catholic Primary School, within Lumen Christi Catholic Multi Academy, with a Catholic ethos that includes the nursery.

Children can start in the autumn term after their third birthday. Capacity is 26 children at a time, with 52 part-time places divided between morning and afternoon groups. Ofsted graded early years provision Good at the inspection on 6 and 7 June 2023; that judgement covers the school’s early years provision.

The Nursery Day

Language and learning habits are the clearest threads running through the nursery’s early years learning. In June 2023, inspectors identified nursery children learning expectations for behaviour and learning from the outset, alongside an emphasis on vocabulary and communication. For a young child, that means learning how to take part as well as developing the words to express ideas.

Topics introduce ideas that children will build on in later learning. The emphasis is on laying foundations: communication and familiarity with learning expectations sit alongside the knowledge introduced through those topics. A morning or afternoon place gives children a three-hour session, repeated across five days.

Care and Support

Support for special educational needs and disabilities is coordinated across the school by the SENDCo, working with teaching staff and families. Parents are involved in reviewing progress and kept informed about the support their child receives. This gives families a role in shaping support, rather than simply receiving updates.

Tuesday appointments with the SENDCo can be booked online, alongside regular meetings with the class teacher. Depending on the child’s needs, communication can include telephone calls, diaries or a home-school book. A sensory room sits on the ground floor of the main school building. These are school-wide arrangements; they should be understood separately from the nursery session itself.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance neither guarantees a Reception place nor gives priority. Families must make a separate application, and children are considered against the same admission criteria whether or not they attend the nursery. Familiarity with the school is no substitute for applying again.

The normal route is through the school admissions process of the local authority where the family lives, naming St Brigid’s Catholic Primary School. A Supplementary Information Form also goes directly to the school. For September 2026 entry, both had a deadline of 15 January 2026. That admissions round is past; its deadline should not be treated as the date for a later intake.

Practical Information

Morning sessions run from 8.45am to 11.45am, afternoons from 12.30pm to 3.30pm, and a full-time place runs from 8.45am to 3.30pm. The booking pattern requires daily attendance: neither part-week places nor ad hoc sessions are accepted. Morning or afternoon preferences may need to give way to balancing the groups.

The universal funded entitlement provides 15 hours each week, taken as five mornings or five afternoons, subject to availability. Eligible families can receive an additional 15 funded hours. Full-time places depend on surplus sessions and staffing ratios, with eligible extended-entitlement families considered first.

Extra time. For children allocated a full-time place with 30-hour funding, the day includes an additional 45 minutes of lunchtime supervision that attracts a daily charge. Families paying for additional hours without extended entitlement pay in advance each half term. Contact the school for current charges.
