A separate nursery building and private garden give St Francis Nursery its own space within a Church of England school in Bournville. The September intake follows each child's third birthday. This is the nursery provision at St Francis Church of England Aided Primary School and Nursery on Teazel Avenue, rather than a separate childcare setting.
Ofsted judged the school's early years provision Good at the inspection on 11 and 12 March 2025. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating.
Independence is a clear feature of the early years experience. In March 2025, learning materials were arranged so children could choose resources and start activities themselves. Adults helped them extend their thinking through conversation. Children could keep working on tasks and concentrate for sustained periods, giving substance to the emphasis on making their own choices.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework guides this stage of learning. Here, the March 2025 findings give parents concrete examples of what that means: phonics and mathematics teaching, children discussing their learning, and adults helping ideas develop. Learning combines teaching with opportunities for children to take the initiative.
The nursery's private garden provides a distinct outdoor space alongside its separate building. The school also describes its timetable as responsive to learning opportunities, allowing activities to influence how the day develops rather than treating the outline as fixed.
The nursery teaching structure includes an EYFS leader who also teaches nursery, alongside another nursery teacher working one day a week. This connects nursery teaching with leadership of the early years stage.
For children needing additional help, the school's support process starts with classroom adjustments. These can include movement breaks, adapted activities, work in smaller groups or individual assistance. Initial support typically runs for approximately six weeks before its impact is reviewed, so the next step depends on how the child responds.
An Individual Pupil Profile breaks support targets into smaller steps. Termly reviews involve parents, the teacher and the special educational needs coordinator, with the child included where appropriate. Parents receive a letter when an intervention is needed, and the coordinator seeks parental permission before referrals to outside agencies. Families can contact the SEN coordinator through parents.stf@fioretti.co.uk or leave a message with the office.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must apply separately through the normal Reception process and meet the deadline for their child's entry year.
The application route combines a Birmingham City Council application with an additional school form. Both parts matter: choosing the nursery should remain a decision about the child's nursery experience, while the Reception application needs its own attention.
For the September 2024 admissions cycle, the nursery arrangements allocated 15 hours each week across five mornings or five afternoons. Five full days were also offered with a paid top-up. Eligibility for 30 funded hours was directed through Childcare Choices. These arrangements describe that past entry cycle; they should not be treated as an offer for October 2026. Contact the school for current charges.
Tours can be arranged through the school office, giving families an opportunity to look around the nursery building and garden. For enquiries, use enquiry.stf@fioretti.co.uk or telephone 0121 459 5548. The nursery is on Teazel Avenue, Bournville, Birmingham, B30 1LZ.
