At a Glance

Role play, birthday cakes made from playdough and an outdoor classroom give this nursery its character. It belongs to the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) at St Margaret Mary RC Junior and Infant School on Perry Common Road, Birmingham. Catholic teaching is part of the curriculum from nursery onwards.

Ofsted graded the school's early years provision Good at the inspection on 25 and 26 March 2025. This is an early years judgement within the school inspection, rather than a separate nursery rating.

The Nursery Day

Speaking and listening get daily attention through games, rhymes and songs. Children participate actively, giving them opportunities to practise communicating rather than simply listening to adults. The EYFS is the nursery's early learning framework; here, its activities include language development, early number work and imaginative play.

The nursery has a role play area, while an interactive outdoor classroom serves the youngest children. These give learning different settings: a role play area and a classroom space outside. Nursery topic materials include All About Ourselves, Traditional Tales and Celebrations, providing identifiable themes for families to follow.

Celebrations brings those themes into concrete activities. Children create firework artwork, make Rangoli patterns and act out a wedding. A playdough birthday cake becomes an opportunity to count candles. Painting a poppy using JIT 5 adds a digital activity to the topic. Early years mathematics also includes counting, exploring numbers and describing shape, space and measurement.

Religious education uses the Archdiocese of Birmingham's Learning and Growing as the People of God scheme, with nursery materials of its own. Choice activities and circle time introduce early years children to expressing a view. In March 2025, the early years curriculum followed a planned learning sequence, and children in early years behaved well and showed an appetite for learning.

Care and Support

Parents have a defined role in the school's SEND arrangements. The SEND coordinator works with teachers, and families can arrange discussions about concerns. An Individual Target Plan sets out additional educational support; medical needs can be recorded through a Care Plan or Personal Alert Card developed with parents and the school nurse. That gives adults a shared account of the help a child needs.

Visual timetables and now and next boards are used for some children who find changes to routines difficult. A home/school contact book can also be agreed where it helps communication. These are individual arrangements, rather than promises that every child receives the same support.

Food allergies have a designated point of contact: the school's allergen champion coordinates allergy management and communication within catering. Families can raise allergy questions through the school enquiry email.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place and gives no admissions priority. The 2027/2028 arrangements require nursery families to apply through their home local authority, just like other applicants. Both the application and the Supplementary Information Form returned to school are due by 15 January 2027.

Transition support is a separate matter. For children with SEND moving from nursery settings into Reception, the SEND information report describes liaison with nursery SEND coordinators, July visits and summer transition days. This prepares children and staff for the change; it does not alter how places are allocated.

Practical Information

Contact the school on 0121 464 6355 or at enquiry@stmgtmry.bham.sch.uk. For SEND concerns, the class teacher is the first contact, followed by the SEND coordinator if the concern remains unresolved.

FAQs
