Nursery at The Shirestone Academy

Conversation and learning to join in give Shirestone’s nursery its character. Adults make language a priority from the outset, alongside helping children manage their feelings and develop social skills. These are practical foundations for taking part in school life: being able to communicate matters as much as becoming familiar with the day’s routines.
The nursery belongs to The Shirestone Academy in Tile Cross, Birmingham, where the school’s age range starts at three. Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Outstanding at the inspection on 6 and 7 December 2023. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating.
An 8:55am start and 3:05pm finish frame the nursery day, with lunch between 11:30am and 12:30pm. For families, those nursery-specific times are the useful ones for planning the daily journey and collection.
Language is central to the learning. In December 2023, adults spent time in conversation with children and understood how to draw them into activities. The emphasis gives children help with participation as well as communication: an adult’s encouragement can make joining in more manageable.
Routines also have a clear place. Children became familiar with school expectations quickly in December 2023, helping them settle into the rhythm of nursery. Alongside this, staff supported their emotional and social development. The picture is of early learning that pays attention to how children take part, rather than treating settling as a separate issue from learning.
Settling was a strength in December 2023. Children adapted promptly to the routines, while staff showed expertise in supporting their feelings and relationships. For a parent considering a first experience of school, that combination matters: children need help both understanding what happens next and feeling able to participate.
Support for families with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) includes a telephone route for concerns and questions. Parents can contact the school on 0121 675 4686. The school also provides a weekly contribution of SEND advice for families and links to Birmingham’s Local Offer, giving parents another route to information about local support.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place at The Shirestone Academy. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process and meet the applicable deadline.
Becoming comfortable with school routines is useful preparation, but it should be kept separate from the allocation of places. The December 2023 findings about children settling describe their experience of early years; they do not establish an admissions advantage. Choose the nursery for the experience it offers your child, and treat the Reception application as a separate task.
Plan around the nursery’s 8:55am start and 3:05pm collection. Lunch occupies the middle of the day, from 11:30am to 12:30pm, so the timetable includes a defined break between morning and afternoon.
